How can I stop picking at scabs?

Asked by Magnus (2884points) November 1st, 2008 from iPhone

I have a bad habit of picking on scabs on my arms, it leaves horrible redness and scars. You know any techniques to keep myself from picking?

I am not being flippant when asking this…

Have you tried covering them w/ band aids? Wearing long sleeves? Keeping them moisturized w/ lotion (scabs itch)?

watch some nightmare on elm street or maybe dead alive. Thats what happens when you pick to many scabs.

I do this, too. I don’t even realize I’m doing it, and next thing you know…I’m bleeding.

I tend to pick at mine too, just because I’m bored. The only way I can stop myself is to think about how ugly it makes my skin look. When imagining how grotesque my legs will in little white shorts during the summer, my fingers instantly move to another form of preoccupation. It’s not worth it.

Try the Band-aid advanced healing bandages; they’re made to stay on your skin for a few days while your wound heals and they hurt like a bitch if you try to pull them off right away, so it might to the trick if you put one on for a couple days

uhm….have some self control you sick twisted freak!

Just STOP IT! You have a brain right? HAHA…man…self control…that is what it is called.

Or perhaps you could just stop getting scabs…what kind of scabs are they? Is this a recurring issue?

Get some help…have some self control…

There are some scabs I pick at, too. It’s usually because they itch like hell, and I’d rather have them hurt than itch. I do wonder if it is some complusive behavior related to being bipolar, but I did it before I got sick, too. It is, however, much worse now. My skin is just crawling with itches, and I can’t stand it. I think I have three or four different anti-itch substances from the dermatologist. Using them helps. But I don’t always use them.

@daloon…you might have a more serious condition…
I am not laughing at you.
Perhaps you are allergic to something around you?

judochop's avatar

why do you all have so many scabs? Are you sliding in to first alot?

augustlan's avatar

If Magnus is anything like me, he probably picks everything, not just scabs. Picking at dead skin, pimples, bug bites, hangnails or very itchy spots can cause scabs. Which we then have to pick! It’s a vicious cycle.

If you’re scratching enough to make a scab then you might want to consider some OCD medicine.

Maybe you can try an anti allergy pill. It worked mostly for me but got pricey.
