This is a just-for-fun opinion poll regarding the differences between men and women when it comes to phone usage?

Asked by Bluefreedom (22944points) November 5th, 2008

I don’t know if this is the norm but it has always appeared to me that women in general like talking on the phone for extended periods of time and they can do it effortlessly it seems. My wife, for instance, can talk to her friends and family on the phone for more than an hour at a time (sometimes up to 2 hours) without a second thought.

As for myself and a few of my male coworkers that I asked about this, we don’t really like talking on the phone for any longer than is absolutely necessary. I can’t think of any significant exceptions to this rule but I do concede that this may not be the norm for all men in general.

So, with the above thoughts in mind, I’m interested in the various opinions of all the male and female Flutherites who would like to offer their input.

It does seem that way, doesn’t it, and I know that my mum and aunties and sister all spend hours on the phone to their girl friends when my male relatives do not. However, I am a female and I don’t really like talking on the phone at all unless necessary, except for with a few certain people who I do talk for ages with, but funnily enough these people are all males. Weird huh?

Oh, I don’t know. I use 100 minutes a month, my husband uses an average of 500.

I’m biologically female, but don’t identify that way. I HATE talking on the phone, but if you can get me to answer or return a call, I can fill pretty large chunks of time.

My parents both spend quite a lot of time (in my opinion) on the phone, but I’ve noticed something about it: My father will divide his time up and have 20— to 30-minute conversations with three or four people each day. My mother will talk for two hours to a different person each day.

I loathe talking on the phone.

I much prefer email for communication. I love voice mail. I will sometimes make phone calls strategically just to get voice mail (e.g. lunch hour, just after work hours (oops!), etc.) I get to say what I want and get out of there…

I’m a girl, I can’t stand talking on the phone, I will text someone for the minimum amount it takes for us to meet in person.

I have a 450min plan every month and over 4,000 rollover minutes I have never touched. At my MOST adventurous I managed to used 200 minutes with customer service.

I’m with Snoopy, strategic calls are win.

Generally I seem to steer clear of the phone as much as I can, with one exception: women. I used to spend a lot of time on the phone with women I shouldn’t have been talking to.

Now that I’m recovering somewhat from my brain disorder, I don’t need those calls. However, there is one female friend I have—she’s also depressed and she saw me through some of the worst times—that I talk to. Other than her, I can’t stand the phone these days.

Before the advent of cell phones, emails and IMs, I (female) would spend hours on the phone with boyfriends, friends, relatives, etc. With all of the ways available to communicate on the fly these days, I don’t do it nearly as often. I often spend major chunks of my day on the phone, but they are many brief calls to conduct business, make logistical arrangements, and just touch base with friends.

PS: Strategic calls are the best, aren’t they?
