Are manicure kits and nailpolish allowed on planes?

Asked by emilyrose (2272points) March 25th, 2009

nailfile (metal), cuticle cutter, etc. I am flying tomorrow and want to do my nails when I arrive at my destination. I only want to check luggage. Can I bring this stuff?

If it’s in your checked baggage, the nail kit will be fine. I’m fairly certain that they aren’t allowed in carry-on baggage though.

Nail polish will probably be OK but a manicure kit with sharp pointy things in it probably won’t be.

Best to check the latest TSA guidelines at their website. Here’s the current list of prohibited items.

I fly with fingernail clippers and files in my carry on always.

@jeruba—thanks for the link—- why don’t they list these items? so common i would guess!

I travel by air a lot and have found different airports are stricter than others.
For instance I have traveled to three different airports and the last one confiscated items that had been with me the whole time. I would check the items to be on the safe side.

yeah guess I will have to skip it because I don’t want to check anything. maybe will have to treat myself to a mani-pedi!

It depends how lucky you are, I flew out Saturday with a hobo bag(purse) and a laptop bag though gate, TSA was more interested in the laptop. I always carry a nail file.

Just not the exploding kind.

I asked at SFO and they said I could indeed bring it. Next time I will!
