Should I volunteer for the hair modeling show?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3163points) September 22nd, 2009

So, I signed up for a ‘hair modelling’ thing after a representative from a hair salon/ company came to tell us about it. To sum it up, there will be hair stylists who determines what would look good on us and is new and fashionable and then cut our hair on stage. We would get a nice gift after for modelling for them.

Now here’s the bad part—> I’ve heard of stories where people go in and get all of their hair chopped off, or in strange colours such as blue, green, pink, yellow all at once and with a partly shaved head! So what should i do in this particular situation?

I wanted to give it a shot since it’s my senior year, but i really don’t want my hair all chopped off. They mentioned that of course the hair stylists would try to find something that fits and suits us well, but from the stories i’ve heard from my classmates…. people are never satisfied with it afterwards.

I’ve also heard that one of the latests styles involve a shaved head on the bottom with long hair on the top….

So what would you do in this situation?... or really, what should I do?

Hair modeling is fun :) Unless you are extremely attached to your hair, take a chance; hair grows back. You may love it.

@ Facade, yeah i suppose, but there is also the great risk of me being bald and colorful (in a bad way) for my grad. :3

How bout inquiring about the type of styles this particular even will showcase and making your decision from there?

The_Inquisitor's avatar

@Facade, it will differ from person to person, depending on their face shape and things like that… but for the other ppl that i’ve heard about, they were not told what was going to be done to their hair, the stylists just did it on the stage.

If I were the type of person who’s carefree about my hair, I would totally do it. But I’m particular, although I wish I weren’t, so there’s not a chance in hell. What kind of person are you with your hair?

I would try to find a more including event. Being a guinea pig is scary.

haha, welll… I guess I’m the type who likes my hair. I still have a bit of hope that the hair stylists will be considerate of my hair tho…. cuz… they still apparently ‘try’ to make us look good (or else it’d look bad for their company too)...

i guess i’ll have more time to think about it… >_<

@curiouscat Yeah, of course they’ll try to make you look good. But their idea of “good” might be waaay different than yours.

I would do it. It sounds like lots of fun. I have very short hair, so I get it cut quite often. Sometimes when I go in I have a specific style in mind, sometimes I just tell him to cut it however he likes. My guy was on vacation a couple weeks ago, and I went to someone else in the same salon and she kind of butchered me, but it’s already grown and looks fine. Whatever they do to your hair will grow and you might like it.

It sounds like you’re pretty anxious about walking into a blind cut, and if you love your hair then I suggest you stay away. Getting a butchered cut and crying your heart out over it (not to mention the anxiety attack on stage while you hear the scissors snip) is not worth a free haircut and a “nice gift.”
I love my hair too much to subject it to that type of situation.

My daughter was a hair model and they asked her how much change she would tolerate, worked around what she was willing to accept, and assigned her to a stylist who worked within parameters my daughter set-after it was over, hair had to be be at least shoulder length, no permanent color changes, no perming. She ended up with a bride of Frankenstein look, and really weird make-up, sort of a futuristic runway model look. When it all came down, the cut was not half bad.

I’ve seen girls with the shaved under portion of long hair. It looks cute with a ponytail, especially of the girl has very thick, curly hair.

Are you able to at least give them a preferred limit?

I think if you do it you’ll be glad. Even if they shave half your head, and you hate it, shave the rest!!! Shaved head on a female…that takes balls. I wish I could do it.
