My friend sells them for $10 a piece.

Social Security Online has a great FAQ about it.
Basically, complete this form, show identification, and prove citizenship (if records don’t already affirm that).

How long is it gonna take?

There’s really no way of knowing—it depends on the state of the bureaucracy. For mine it was just a couple of weeks.

Takes about 10 days – 2 weeks apparently. I do hope no one on this board KEEPS their SSN/card in their wallet. The ONLY need you have for it is when you apply for a job or open a bank account or credit card (note in Canada we do NOT have to supply our SIN number for credit cards). You should NEVER furnish it to anyone else for any reason (although you might need it when dealing with school not sure how that works in the USA). I would never keep my SIN (what we call it in canada) in my wallet.

We strongly advise that you do NOT carry your Social Security card in your wallet except on days when you need to show it to, say, to a new employer.

Although the online world might be an exception in some circumstances:

If you are a US individual, we are required by tax rules to collect your Social Security number (SSN) so that we can send you payments from the ads on your Google Book Search pages. We cannot accept alternate forms of identification.

I HAVE AN SSN, BUT HAVE LOST MY CARD. HOW DO I GET A REPLACEMENT?

If you lose your Social Security Card and wish to obtain a replacement you have to follow the process as if you were a first time applicant, i.e. you will need to show evidence of employment even if you originally obtained your SSN without having employment.

You can replace your card for free if it is lost (or stolen) by visiting the local Social Security Administration office.

You will need to:
Complete an Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5);
Present a recently issued document to show your identity (passport).
Show evidence of your current immigration status if you are not a U.S. citizen. (I-20 and I-94)
A letter from the on-campus employer addressed to the Social Security Administration (a sample letter is available here)

NOTE: A student who had received an SSN based on an EAD (for OPT) or CPT, will need to show a valid EAD or an I-20 showing an unexpired CPT endorsement. The letter from the employer is not required in this case.

A letter issued by the Bechtel International Center confirming your F-1 student status
After obtaining the letter from the I-Center confirming your F-1 status, take the aforementioned documents to the local Soc. Sec. Administration Office.
Your replacement card will have the same name and number as your previous card. The replacement card will be issued in about 10 days.

NOTE: You may not request your SSN over the phone.

I’ve lost my wallet, what should I do?
Depending on whether and how quickly you got it back, and whether you suspect someone might have stolen your credit cards, driver’s license, or SS Card, different steps are called for. A complete guide is available at the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.

Do not carry your SSN card in your wallet except for situations when it is required, such as the first day of a new job. If possible, do not carry any items in your wallet that include your SSN, such as insurance cards, except when they are needed to receive healthcare services. Your wallet could be lost or stolen, resulting in your SSN being vulnerable to fraudulent use.

Generally, you may need to show your Social Security card to your employer when you start a job. Therefore, if you anticipate starting new employment, you should request a replacement card in advance.

You can replace your Social Security card for free if it is lost or stolen. However, you are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during your lifetime. Legal name changes and changes in immigration status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship.
