What is the Worst Dream you have ever had?

Asked by tyrantxseries (4722points) November 24th, 2009

I’m in a Dream mood someone got me in so I’m typing out some of my dreams for my blog, they are what I would consider “normal” dreams for me(probably nightmares for you), nothing too bad
What BAD dreams do you have that “make you wake up in a sweat” or “you have trouble falling back asleep” or keep you up for the rest of the night?

Worst dream I ever had was one were I had accidentally killed someone. I don’t remember the details of the dream exactly, but for most of the next day I couldn’t shake the incredible feeling of guilt and I felt like the law was coming after me.

I witnessed my mom’s heart attack when I was 10 (I witnessed her die but she was resuscitated). Ever since that night I have had a re-occuring nightmare. Here it is:
I wake up in my bedroom (my childhood bedroom). I am wearing a nightgown I had as a child (this doesn’t change depending on my age- if I am 10 in the dream or 25-my age does change in the dream as it does in real life-I am always still wearing the same nightgown). I go out to our backyard. I am on the deck overlooking the backyard and I see a man in a flannel shirt chopping wood with an axe. I watch him chop for about ten seconds and then he notices me. He looks at me with deep red eyes. That’s it. I know, it doesn’t sound scary but when I wake up I feel like someone (axe man?) is still watching me and it gives me the chills. I can just forget about falling asleep the rest of the night. This has happened less and less over time but does still occur. When I was 10 (right after seeing my mom die and be brought back) this happened every night. By 15 it was maybe once a month or every other month. Now it happens maybe once a year or so. It’s been a while.

It lasted for eight years and just ended this last January. It’s just too painful to talk about.

Being with the woman of my dreams. She was perfect!
Everything my heart desired. I mean she was it.

Then I woke up. Was miserable all day.

I do hate that dream.

I don’t often have bad dreams, usually just nonsense dreams. There was one nightmare that still gives me the creeps when I think about it.

I was in high school, and made the bad decision to go see “Pet Sematary” with my two best friends. We laughed through most of the movie, but that night I had a terrible dream about it. In the movie, one character has a sister who is suffering from some kind of disease (can’t remember what it was). The sister is mean, all hunched up, and just freaky in the otherwise kind of funny movie.

In the dream, I was in my very pink bedroom, in bed, and looked up to see the sister from the movie dragging herself across my bedroom floor. I jumped out of bed and ran to the door, but it wouldn’t open. cliche, anyone? As I’m tugging on the door and crying, she’s dragging herself slowly closer and closer, grimacing and drooling and generally being very terrifying. I only had that dream once, but it disturbed me so much I have never been able to watch that movie again. Not that I would really want to.

Another time, when I was in college, I had a dream that I was hanging out in my dorm room when a big hairy monster barged in and ripped my arms off. The dream then skipped to me being back in my dorm room, fully recovered, surrounded by concerned friends. Still armless, I was very worried about how I’d carry my backpack to class. I’ve never forgotten that dream, even though it wasn’t so scary, just because it seemed unusual for my dream self to be preoccupied about the backpack, of all things.

I just had one of those. Now I’m in rare form and don’t want to talk about it.
One of those where you want to curl up in a ball with someone cozy and talk about how much life sucks. (makes sense to me.)

The one where my Mom was grinding me up in meat grinder. I was adopted and scared to death of making my parents mad for fear that they’d “send me back” or kill me.

There are these two weird creepy scary dreams I had when I was 5. Then when I was 10. Then when I was 15. The same ones. I dreaded going to bed all of last year, but it looks like I avoided them this time SUCKAS!
Hmm just realized that I visited relatives in Canada when I was 5…and 10…and 15, and never since then. Coincidence?

I had one dream that was scary because of how realistic it was. In the dream I wake up and I’m surrounded by four walls and a ceiling at the borders of my bed.. I think to myself (in the dream) that it’s a dream so I reach out and touch each surface. I feel every one of the surfaces and they are solid. I panic. I can’t get out! And then I wake up.

But the absolute scariest dream I ever had was when I was sick as a kid. I had a dream that I was on some sort of giant spherical honeycomb. Inside each “cell” of the honeycomb was some different insect or bug. I would fight and fight to get away from the creatures and get out of the cell only to fall into another one with something even more grotesque and frightening.

I’ve twice dreamed that my father died. Both times it was so intensely REAL, that when I woke up, I didn’t know if it had actually happened or not. Most disturbing part of my dream is that my sisters wouldn’t let me go in and say goodbye to him.

The intense reality of the dream was unbelievable, I could smell that ‘hospital smell’ I heard all of the typical background noises you hear, there were the uncomfortable chairs in the waiting area, and the “crying room” down the hall (don’t know what they actually call that room, but I’ve been in it for each of my grandparents passing) the overwhelming sadness coupled with the frustration of not being able to see my Dad… both times this dream lasted till morning, so BOTH times when I woke up, I wasn’t sure if it had really happened and I was just home from the hospital, or if it was a dream…

I watched ‘An american werewolf in london’ when I was about 7 or 8, it was my birthday, and my friends from school all came over for a party, I don’t think my mother really new what I’d got from the video shop, and to be fair, videos where fairly new.

All sat round the tele, we watched the film, my cousin Andy spent the whole film behind the tele, whereas I was glued.

That night (as you can probably imagine) I didn’t get a winks sleep, and I was sleeping head to toe with one of my school friends.

Every night I would go to sleep and pull the covers right over my head with just my nose sticking out, and I used to think, if anything comes into the room, my brother will get it first coz he’s nearest the door!....

Most of my nightmares were recurring, and would always involve a door of some discription which I was trying to lock. I would close the door, lock it, and then check the handle, but everytime I turned the handle, the door would open. This would repeat untill I was frantically trying over and over to lock the door, whilst ever mindfull that out in the distance in the pitch dark of the woods that I could see through the door window, there was a monster heading towards me.

Every night it would be the same scenario, the door wouldn’t lock, and then all of a sudden I would be attacked. My mum got worried at one point because I would wake up and the bed would be wet through from a cold sweat, but I never told her about the nightmares.

Years went by, and I had learn’t that sleeping on my back would induce a nightmare, and still does some nights even now at 34. But over those years I had also derived methods of surviving the nightmare attacks, and even defeating the werewolf that plagued my dreams.

These nightmares became ever more ferocious in nature culminating in an epic realistc yet amazingly sureal battle between a werewolf, a zombie and my mum.

Sat in the dining room in the bungalow we lived in, I was going through my usual routine of closing the door as the sun was going down, and becoming ever more ancious and looking out to the woods waiting for the inevitable, but after about the sixth time of trying the handle, this big fuckin scary werewolf runs at me and I just manage to pull the door accross its face, but as I do this, from round the corner a feckin 8 foot zombie stops me from closing the door fully and screams ‘HE’S MINE!’ to the werewolf, now usually by this time I’ve been mauled to death by the werewolf and woken up, but for some reason my brain had decided that another 20 seconds or so of fear was necessary, so as this zombie breaks through the door and reaches for me, my mum from behind, picks me up with one arm and pushes me into the corner of the ceiling, when I duly woke up with my heart trying to burst out of my chest (and the bed wringing wet!). I was 15!......

Furtunately, that was pretty much the last I saw of the werewolf. He still visits me from time to time, but I’ve learn’t all the signs of when he’s around, and I’ve found now that, a preemtive strike with my hands in its mouth and wrenching its jaws open untill its head splits open backwards usually does the trick.

Looking back now though, a few good things came from the nightmares, I can now fly in most of my dreams, I always remember them when I wake up, most of my dreams are lucid, nothing is stronger than me in my dreams, and on accasion, I have been known to morph into things, including ironically, a werewolf!......

So far in my dreams I have been:
shot
blown up
eaten alive
drowned
and possessed.

Strangely though, I have noticed that I’ve only ever had one dream where I was in space?????? probably because I’ve never been, who knows…...
