Can one person build a web site that compete with the big ones?

Asked by Ranimi23 (1917points) December 12th, 2009

Well, I have an idea for a great web site at my country. The only thing that is bother me is that I can’t play in the field with big ones. They have a lot of money, lots of workers, and I’m alone only have idea that need my full attention. It’s scares me a bit, because I want it to be one of the top 10 web site in my country. Is it possible to do that all alone? I know what to do and how, I just need the time and probably the courage.

I think a lot of people around me just don’t have fiat in my idea. So I am looking now for a great motivation. It’s hard. I know one day it will be a big success… just need to keep on going with it.

Start small and build and and learn and grow. Might as well give it a shot and grow as you learn.

People often fail because the idea that they have starts out too big at first, and it becomes impossible to do. Start small. Plan well. Find a need and fill it. Imagine that you are doing the project in Agile, and write the stories, plan the releases. Start with something small that has unique value, that could possibly attract investors or partners. Recognize that it will take time, and be prepared to stay with it.

Read the book Lucky or Smart by Bo Peabody. But I’d say if you’re in the financial situation to devote all your time to your idea, do it.

find investors into your idea possibly sponsors from local companies in your area so you can start small and build on it, most people in an area are also looking for help with there business and are willing to pull out some extra money to place in your idea as long as you are willing to help them promote there business thats how most of the big ones got big you never want to just start out big because then you are just putting lots of cash on the table for some thing that may not pay out if you start small then your not risking it all on this one idea and it also gives room for change as the industry changes

The website for my company is based on DotNetNuke. It’s been a really, really great platform for us. A few sites you can check out.

DotNetNuke Project Home Page – www.dotnetnuke.com
My Website, an example of a fully implemented DNN site – www.analysys.net
Another example – these folks are good friends of ours – www.bethesdagreen.org
A great third party resource for DNN sites – www.snowcovered.com

Hope this helps!
