My CD/DVD drive won't open... what's up?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7999points) March 2nd, 2010

I even tried the paperclip thing and clicked those little buttons and nothing happened.

Any other tips?

It might not be getting power to the servo-mechanism, or it might be fried. Anyway, it sounds like a hardware problem. Swap it out and see what happens.

@dpworkin ; swap it out? it won’t even open. xD

The easy thing to do is to plug in a USB DVD drive and move on with life. They are so cheap there is no reason to do otherwise.

You don’t need to open it to swap it out.

A friend of mine worked IT at a local University here and he actually got this call: “Um, my computer is not working. Even the coffee cup holder won’t come out!” She was serious…

Mine refuses to open every once in a while. I bang on the top of the tower with my fist and then it pops right open.

Sounds like you’ve downloaded the corrupt update. If you look on my computer does your cd drive show? If not I will post the fix once I have cut and pasted it to the next answer!

Hit start and type regedit in the seach bar. Select local machine then system, then current control set, then control, then class, then select the set that starts 4D36E965. Once in there delete the upper and lower filters. Restart your machine and it should work fine :-)

@OreetCocker – for a Mac guy, you sure know your stuff when it comes to PCs!

@stratman37. Thanks, just a little something I picked up on the way :-)
