How do you improve your memory?

Asked by cockswain (15286points) March 17th, 2010

Anyone ever tackle this problem? If someone knows a good book on the subject, or knows some techniques, or whatever, I’m all ears.

There area several good titles on this subject; unfortunately i can’t remember any of them now. However, if you go to amazon and type in keywords “memory improvement” or “memory enhancement” you will get numerous hits. It is a hot topic right now.

@janbb Seriously, you read the books but can’t remember them?

janbb's avatar

No – haven’t read them, but as a librarian I’m aware that there are a number of them out there. If I were you, I would probably go to a bookstore and browse several titles, then select the one that seems most useful to you.

I’m not a librarian and I know there are books on the subject. I’d like a solid, specific recommendation so as not to waste my time on snake oil.

@cockswain Sorry if I came off as sounding snotty; didn’t mean to be. I thought I was suggesting some ways you might go about finding such a book. Sorry if that wasn’t the kind of help you wanted.

@janbb I thought you were joking. You forgot the titles of the books about improving your memory? That’s a good one!

I once read in a fantasy book that a little girl learned to be more attentive and remember details by being quizzed by her surrogate mother on her surroundings. They’d walk in a forest and the woman would ask her “How many birds were on that oak tree we just passed?” and similar questions. Maybe play some memory games (even the card game would work) with a friend or by yourself.

well….it its study related, it is beneficial to study in the same place each day. Also, wearing a particular perfume/ cologne every time you study a particular subject is a good idea. BUT this doesn’t work well for cramming….

@janbb Some people can’t remember to have manners especially when asking for assistance. I didn’t think you sounded snotty.

The key is good sleep. The hippocampus needs this to organize long-term memory.

@shadling21 The quip about not remembering the titles was jocular, but the advice was for real.
