How do you un-stick a car key that is stuck in the car door?

Asked by RedPowerLady (12618points) May 13th, 2010

My car key is stuck in the car door. If we can’t get it out the insurance will send someone to do it tomorrow. But that would mean it’s stuck in there overnight. I really don’t want to have to do that. They couldn’t find someone to do it for us tonight. So do you have any suggestions on what I can try?

I have a PT Cruiser 2001. The key won’t even turn all the way in the lock. It will turn enough to unlock the rest of the doors but even if I pull on the lock from the inside it won’t budge.

Thanks for any ideas at all :)

WD40, and wiggle a lot? I’ve had that work.

I’m going to have to get some on the way home and try!

yeah, i’d try loosening it up with silicon grease and trying to slip it out. good luck!

Spray the WD40 generously in the lock and around the key. let it set for about 5 minutes to saturate the metal inside the lock mechanism. use a pair of wire pliers and gently, i said gently move the key back and forth. if its ever going to come losse, it will be now. gentle is the key word here. you do not want to break off the key inside the lock.

What a bummer it didn’t work. I guess it’s the locksmith tomorrow.

Assuming that you can’t get the key out and you can’t lock the vehicle in a garage overnight, you should take ever item out of the car that isn’t part of the car. That way, if anything (like a radio) is stolen out of the car, the insurance company would have no recourse but to pay. They might even have to cover a deductible since the theft was aided, in part by their inaction.

@dpworkin What part do you have to wiggle? Your eybrows? Your legs? Your whole body?

haven’t you ever had to pee?

So we had the locksmith out this morning. They got the key out. But the lock is still stuck. Argh!

Blow some graphite grease into the lock. It is a powder grease that works well for locks.
