Can you use corn oil instead of vegetable oil when making a cake?

I would imagine so. I now use applesauce as a substitute for the oil, it makes it a little moister, and doesn’t seem to alter the taste at all. Welcome to Fluther.

Yes, corn oil is a vegetable oil. I usually substitute butter for vegetable oil, and like @JilltheTooth‘s suggestion, applesauce can work as a substitute for practically anything.

Corn oil is actually the preferred vegetable oil for baking. I wouldn’t touch canola oil for baking since it can have a fishy smell, and olive oil and peanut oil are of course too heavy and strong flavored. That leaves primarily sunflower oil and corn oil for baking.

I agree with @JilltheTooth on both counts: I’ve had cakes made with apple sauce as a substitute for oil, and they were great.

Otherwise, corn oil is fine. And it’s not the only oil you could use, either: safflower oil is pretty light. Check out the Wikipedia article for Cooking Oil.
