No because I doubt that the culture in Chile puts as much pressure on in saying that smoking is dangerous/bad and there’s likely not much encouragement to quit. I bet they all had a cigarette and a beer as soon as they were done with the medical checkups. Hell, if it was me I’d be having a party.

None. Most likely they will never work again . It will be interesting to see how they handle the fame and money that comes with it. I’m betting that they will pick up other “bad” habits along the way. Time (and the press) will tell.

I doubt very many of them will quit now they are back on the surface. Interestingly, in Marine Corps boot camp, the recruits are not allowed to smoke for the three months they are there. I would think this forced tobacco free existence for 90 days is sufficient to break the addiction. However, most immediately go back to smoking once they are back in the world.

They will smoke. It is a third world pastime.

My guess is, they’ll all keep smoking. Ah, but will they mine again?

@rts486: regarding your answer, don’t the boot campers get days off? and if so (and i’m thinking they would) wouldn’t they have opportunity to do what they wanted, being unsupervised?

@ica No, they get no days off. They don’t get any time off. They don’t have access to anything that isn’t issued to them. They are supervised 24/7.

I’m sure some of the more enterprising recruits have figured out a way to get a cigarette, but I’m sure this is very rare.
