We had 20 inches of snow in one night, and then a further 6 inches over the next few days, which caused understandable chaos. I can work from home, and we were well stocked up with food etc., so it wasn’t too much of a drama, but my partner works in a hospital and had a lot of hassle getting to work on the train – the car was out of the question. The cats weren’t happy either – the cat flap has snowed up during the night and we had to dig them a trench out of the house!
Generally, because of our position at the end of the Gulf Stream, any snow we do get is usually light and gone within 24–48 hours, so as a country we’re not really tooled up for dealing with this prolonged and more severe spell of cold.
