If you get really upset with a close friend of yours in a dream, can you be mad at them when you wake up?

So, you have this dream, and a really close friend of yours does something so bad you’ve never been so angry with them. When you wake up you keep thinking about this dream, however, would you be mad at your friend that entire day although it was a harmless dream?

Dreams have a funny way of altering emotions. I’ve had dreams that were so intense that they altered my perception of a person involved for a while after waking.

It’s irrational to consciously propagate that kind of anger, though.

Yes. I have. But, I also told them what happened, made sure they knew that I was being irrational because of it, and got over it very quickly.

Absolutely not.

You’re mad at them in the dream for whatever happened in the dream? So this means you should be mad at them in reality for something they didn’t actually do? That’s nuts!

Hey, I had a dream you gave me $100. Fork it over, dude!

amyh2477's avatar

absoluetly not, how would you feel if someone had a dream and treated you that way?

Seaofclouds's avatar

You can definitely still feel the anger from the dream if it was intense enough when you wake up. It’s irrational because they know nothing about it, but it’s still there. You can talk to them about it so they know what’s going on with you. It’s important to remember it was a dream and that they have no clue what’s going on unless you tell them.

Yes. I don’t claim that it’s rational, but it’s there. Once I realize what I’m doing, I try to chill out (work through my anger with Dream Friend, not Real Friend), but often that just means that I take a few hours of breathing time and space until I can get my shit together.

You have no right to express to your friend your anger at what “they” did in your dream. Some dream interpretation says that different people in our dreams represent different aspects of ourselves.

Yes I would still be mad at them. At least, I could be, if I was a complete asshole…

hug_of_war's avatar

No, and I think it’s idiotic to do such a thing

I think you’re conflating “can you be mad at them” with “would a rational human with half a brain be mad at them”. Not the same questions, at all.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@CyanoticWasp Where are these totally rational humans? I know of exactly no humans that are 100% rational 100% of the time.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

Surely you know people with half a brain? I never said anything about 100% rational… that wouldn’t be human, either.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@CyanoticWasp A few, yes ;D

I would be mad at my brain for trying to cause drama.

Damn brains.

No, of course I wouldn’t. Dreams are a figment of your imagination; if anything, you should be mad at yourself. I had a dream recently that I had sex with my straight friend. Does that mean I should go do it because he’ll be willing to like he was in my dream?

I have had some dreams which were so emotionally intense that they did alter my waking feelings. Anger, not specifically. But I did once dream that I hurt someone I loved very much. I awoke and I was so remorseful that I actually cried.

downtide's avatar

Not at all. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever had a dream in which I was mad with a friend. I’de had plenty where I was mad with family members, but it didn’t carry over outside of the dream.

YARNLADY's avatar

Well, you can, but it would not be justified, since your own mind is what invented the dream and everything that happened in it is your fault and no one else.

Supacase's avatar

You can, but you shouldn’t.

I called my boyfriend all pissed off because I had a dream that he cheated on me. I think I was still half asleep and I know I woke him up. It took a while for both of us to settle down and figure out what was going on. We laughed about it later, though.

Junfan's avatar

You can do whatever you like.

MilkyWay's avatar

i think you can, but it really depends on how seriously you took the dream. I HAVEN’T DREAMT A DREAM like that but one of my close friends did.
she dreamt we had a fist fight because i ate the last fruit yoghurt in the fridge . . . she told me the next day and we laughed and joked about it.
