I’m going to guess that it might have been Sidney the Elephant that they used to show at the drive in theater before the double feature (in the 1960’s).
Me and my brother were allowed to play on the swings that were set up right under the movie screen. We, of course would be dressed in our PJ’s. Right when it started to get dark, they would show a patriotic clip and play the National Anthem on the screen. That was my brother’s and my cue to start running toward the car (a corvair station wagon) so that we wouldn’t miss the cartoon.
Right after the National Anthem and before the cartoon, they would also show a little clip of soda cups and hot dogs marching or dancing across the screen to advertise the goodies at the concession stand. We always went to Thrifties Drug Store before going to the “picture show” so we could get a better deal on our candy, which usually consisted of Dots, Malt Balls and Starbursts. My mom always got a Sugar Mama on a stick and my dad always got a Hershey bar with almonds. Just in case we got thirsty, my mom always carried one of those little folding plastic cups in the glove compartment.
Sidney was so cute and they had this really neat “jungle music” in the background and the background drawings were either minimalist or later they looked a little more like colorful psychedelic designs.
