I woke up listening to NPR this morning on the clock-radio. They were in the middle of a story on the Connecticut race for a new Senator. The race is between a popular young Democratic Representative (one-term or two, I’m not sure), Chris Murphy vs. Linda McMahon, the Republican former owner of WWE (or some “wrestling” organization or another). This in a heavily Democratic state in one of the most Democratic parts of the country.
McMahon has a slight lead in the polls. Of course, it’s early in both candidates’ campaigns and things will change as time goes on. The news story went on to mention that “Murphy probably expects to get help by coasting on Obama’s coattails” in this state, because it’s such a near-certain state for the incumbent President. That’s when they continued with the story to mention that “Obama’s coattails aren’t very long in Connecticut”; he’s only got a slim lead over Romney.
If Obama has to struggle (at all, the least little bit) to carry Connecticut, he’s not only going to lose the election, but he’ll lose big, in a landslide.
So what I’d say to a prospective voter (on either side) is, “Why bother? Stock up on some liquor because the bars will be closed, and just stay home and drink.”
We lose, no matter who wins.
