I had to learn the joys of discipline from a very early age. When I was a little kid, there wasn’t even short-term insulin, so I could not be spontaneous at all. I had to eat according to the demands of the long term insulin. I couldn’t eat what I wanted when I wanted.
Suffice to say I am very grateful for short term insulin now and don’t take it for granted! If I have a craving now, I can indulge it… But it’s also a double edged sword because insulin is what makes you gain weight…I try to think in terms of my total consumption for the day, and adjust accordingly. For instance, yesterday, I was working at a volunteer job for 6 hours, on my feet the whole time. I felt like I deserved an egg and cheese bagel afterwards! But I had a smaller than usual dinner, with no carbs, to compensate. I don’t usually crave specific foods, I just crave putting something fatty/starchy/fried in my mouth :-p
