@Self_Consuming_Cannibal Not bitter, not really & no bad experiences either, had some brilliant birthdays, but the composition of that song has always bugged me a little, so twee.
@Self_Consuming_Cannibal Three of the four lines are repeated, stating the bleedin obvious & the fourth simply inserts a name prefixed by a ridiculous “dear”, genius stuff.
I completely disagree with @ucme – Happy Birthday is simply a tune used to convey a group of people’s intent on wishing someone a Happy Birthday. The melody is simple, as are most children’s songs (well, it is for children primarily) and much like a prayer – it is repeated several times…in unison. Like a chant. This predates written language and is very important for social and cultural interaction. I vote Happy Birthday is one of the best songs of all time.
@livelaughlove21 I’ll give it a chance. Actually, Melody Gardot does a decent rendition also. But when it comes up in rotation on my ipod I still want to skip over it!
@flutherother & @janbb I had to go look, because I’d never heard of it. Scarier than the song (and that was bad enough) was seeing Jimmy Savile’s name splashed over the screen, since it was a Top of the Pops clip. Creeped me right out.
@livelaughlove21 I watched the video and I have to admit, he did a very beautiful rendition of it. It had almost a reggae beat and his voice is very soothing.
