Title is pretty self explanatory. I was walking next to a creek with a few friends, then all of a sudden I felt this terrible pain in my right foot, literally stopped me in my tracks.(I was wearing shoes) I looked around and didn’t see anything, took my shoe off… and I had two faint marks from something. The pain subsided, and I literally rubbed my spit on it, then applied mud since nothing else was available. Kept walking around, and I was fine. It never swelled up or pussed or anything.

A day or two had gone by, it started to itch, so I checked on it again. Apparently I wasn’t just “bit” twice, but four times. That was almost a week ago, I looked at it again a few minutes ago and the marks have since turned red and two of them look like tiny scratches… Which kinda freaks me out a little. I live in western New York, I have no idea what this could be. I’m sure I’ll be fine but I’m just curious to see if anyone else has experienced anything like this? I haven’t been stung by a bee in over 10 years, but I would say it felt quite similar. There was no stinger though or bee corpse. I’ve never been stung by a horsefly or anything like that either, so I have no idea if it could be that. It was just the weirdest thing. One last piece of info, my shoes have next to zero space for anything to fall in them. Checked the inside after it happened and found nothing.

I’m guessing it was a spider bite. They feel like a bee sting. But I would get it checked out by your doctor.

Make sure you didn’t get chiggers. They are the only thing I know of that has you itching days later. Ant bites and spiders and fleas and tick usually itch the same day on. Chiggers lay eggs in you and it causes you to itch.

Go to the hospital

As long as it doesn’t get infected it doesn’t really matter. I don’t see how we can know what you were bitten by. If it starts to hurt and get inflamed and the inflamed area grows consistently bigger or there are red streaks running from the bites up your foot and leg (there does not have to be any inflamation with the streaks) those are emergencies. Otherwise, just treat the itch and remember to use repellent or wear long clothing if you walk in the woods or in the evening. I like Benedryl spray best for itch.

@Pandora It wouldn’t be a tick. Ticks are painless the first couple days, they inject a numbing agent. Thats the problem with ticks, you don’t know they have attached to you. If your lucky you fill it crawling on you. My husband and I have both had ticks attached and we never felt anything. I agree ants and chiggers are possibilities. Although, when I lived in NY I don’t remember any biting ants, I always think of that as a hot climate thing, but I really don’t know.

@Louisalice Let me take that back. I don’t know what it was. Let the pro’s decide.

Spiders always leave two holes. This could have been a spider bite, and you got bit twice, but it must have been an extremely small spider for you to at first think it was only two holes instead of four. If you were going to have a reaction to the venom it would have happened before now. You’ll be OK unless it gets infected.

@Pandora It couldn’t possibly be a chigger. They are microscopic and produce intense itching (so bad many people can’t sleep). Once one gets on you, it settles into a depression of the skin such as where a hair comes out, and begins to feed. After a day or so, the skin grows around it and forms a cone shape bump with a hole in the center. OP has itching, but I get the idea it’s not as intense as a typical chigger bite. And no mention about the characteristic bumps.

@JLeslie @snowberry I was thinking spider, which would make sense if it somehow got into my shoe and was extremely small, I would have never saw it since it would have gotten totaled as I was taking my foot out. My first initial thought though was something stinging or biting me through the mesh part of the side of my shoe.

I know I’ll probably never figure it out, but I wanted to see if maybe I could narrow it down or something. Get at least some info and opinions on it.

I was thinking spider shudders as well.
I would have it checked out, like some others have mentioned.
Some of those nasty little pieces of work can do a lot of damage.

@JLeslie is right, unless you get red or streaks (usually red/ white), you’re probably okay.

You can bathe the area with a bleach/water 50/50 mixture or use Neosporin or Calamine for the itch, but in future, make sure to tap the toes of your shoes on the floor, and shake shoes out before wearing. Even in closets a spider can find them nice little homes.
