Why wear pajamas to bed?

“Great Question” (3points)

I have never worn anything (except undergarments, occasionally) while sleeping, and am puzzled as to the benefit of stuff like nightshirts, slips, pajama bottoms, etc. Don’t they get all bunchy?

If you wear pajamas to sleep in, what kind do you use? Have you always used that type or have you changed it up? And why?

Bonus question: I haven’t been sleeping well lately, partly due to temperature fluctuations throughout the night. Would wearing pajamas potentially help with this?

I can’t imagine why!

I wear them for warmth in the winter. I wear pajama pants and a long sleeve shirt.
I wear short pants and a t shirt in the summer. I’m just more comfortable wearing something to bed.

Because my roommates keep the place freezing cold. I wear a sweatshirt and sweatpants to bed. So much for Florida heat…
It feels weird wearing nothing but underwear. I’ve done it before. It makes me feel itchy and uncomfortable, even if it’s 90 degrees.

I wore pj’s for years, because I get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, and I didn’t want to shock the children, should I run into them.

I never liked sleeping with clothes of any sort on so I feel you.

I did wear them because my parent insisted until I was 10. I wear them when I am staying with someone I am not sexually involved with or have a robe for when I had roommates.

Although embarrassingly sometimes I forgot. It just never occurred to me and at some point after going on a trip with my sister she bought me some for Christmas.

I do sometimes wear them now because my house gets cold. It is important they are loose and non binding. And the texture must be smooth and soft and breathable. Oh and they have to be cute or flattering. Idk why as I sleep alone most nights. But it is a big factor.

I hate pajamas or any type of clothes when I’m sleeping. I only wear boxer shorts to bed. Even in the winter.

El_Cadejo's avatar

It’s cold as hell in my room so pajamas. Also I don’t wear underwear so it’d be pj’s or naked and well that’d be a pain in the ass to get dressed every time I have to take a piss at 3 am

zenvelo's avatar

I wear underwear unless I am sleeping with a partner, then it’s naked even if we’re not having sex that night. It’s mostly to keep skin oils from transferring to the sheets, and then getting dirty and transferring dirt back on to me.

Most of them feel comfortable wearing pajamas to bed during winter. Though people say it’s healthy to sleep naked because when we sleep naked the sweat or moisture on our body evaporates into the air, but I don’t like being without them, I normally wear a nightie or slip. I guess it’s a comfort thing. Moreover at night I use the bathroom or go to the kitchen for some water and I wouldn’t want my daughter to see me naked. She at times comes over to sleep with us when she is scared.

My house is cold and drafty, and pajamas are my “lazing around the house” clothes. I wear them to bed, but also in the hour or two before bed and after waking up.

I have one of those memory foam mattresses and a gigantic fluffy comforter. The air in the room is freezing, but going to bed in all that stuff feels like being in a cocoon.

johnpowell's avatar

It is 30 degrees outside and I sleep with my windows open. I wear clothes since I have to pee a few times a night and my bathroom is far away and cold.

pleiades's avatar

I rarely do. But in the winter I wear them for warmth. I wear Hanes sweats (bottoms) for my Pajamas and Hanes sweaters for my top

(Do those count as a pajama outfit?)

Pandora's avatar

I’ve always worn PJ’s. For several reasons.
It keeps you warm in the winter when you knock the blanket off, like I tend to do.
I like to sleep with the bedroom door open. So it is handy to have pj’s on if you have guests.
In the summer, it helps protect most of me from flying insects.

In case of fire, I will be able to rush out quickly without having to throw something on. I went through a fire drill one time in my building in Japan (actually it was a bomb threat.Someone saw a suitcase left in the lobby and called it in) . It was winter and there were a lot of freezing people standing outside. Luckily I always had my hat and gloves and coat and socks by the front door. So as the kids and I ran out we grabbed our stuff and went out into the cold. Other people were not so prepared and you can tell that all they had was a robe on or a coat.

Coloma's avatar

I’ve slept naked for my entire life, much after about age 12. lol
I have 3 blankets and a comforter on my bed in winter and sleep without a top sheet and use an amazingly soft fleecey blanket. Infact, I’m just out of the shower and about to drop my bath robe and slip into my oh, so comfy bed now. :-D

Berserker's avatar

I sleep in my birthday suit. I really love anything that’s soft, so I always have the perfect amount of pillows and blankets to keep perfectly warm, whatever the condition. The exception is when it’s too hot, and obviously then, clothes are not an option. Got a nice bathrobe for when I need to go to the can, or pilfer away some snacks.
Fuck pajamas.

DominicX's avatar

I wear pajamas during the colder months for the warmth. I don’t wear regular clothing, because pajamas are more comfortable than regular clothing. During the warmer part of the year, I typically sleep in only underwear and nothing else.

BQ: For me what helps with temperature fluctuations is wearing socks. No socks if it’s warm, socks if it isn’t. Seems to make a world of difference for me…wearing pajamas is probably going to make you warmer, so if being too warm is the problem, it’s not really going to help.

Lorna's avatar

I don’t understand why adults do. I wore them as a child and wouldn’t dream of it now. I have the quilt to keep me warm, and it isn’t very sexy either is it? Each to their own.

livelaughlove21's avatar

I wear them because I’m more comfortable that way. I tried to sleep naked once or twice when I still slept alone to see what the big deal was, but I didn’t like it at all.

This isn’t a reason that I’ve thought of before, but it’d be awful to wake up to your house burning down and have to spend precious moments finding clothes to put on before saving your ass.

As for what I wear – shorts and a t-shirt or underwear and a t-shirt in the warm months and pajama pants and a t-shirt in the cold months. No, they don’t bunch up. If they do, I don’t notice.

My husband wears boxer briefs, regardless of temperature.

^ I don’t think I’m too worried about being “sexy” while we’re sleeping, either. I doubt the dog between us would be too impressed either way.

ucme's avatar

Personal preference obviously, i’ve not worn them since I was a kid, prefer shorts or nowt.

downtide's avatar

I wear whatever keeps me warm enough. Usually boxer briefs and a t-shirt is enough. In winter when its really cold I wear sweatshirt and sweatpants. It has to be really baking hot before I strip off and sleep naked. I never wear classic pyjamas though, because they’re too loose and baggy, the sleeves and legs roll up and I may as well not wear them at all. They do nothing to keep me warm.

Pachy's avatar

I wore ‘em as a kid, but then I became a man and put away childish things… at least pjs. They just feel superfluous and confining under my duvet. I usually don’t even like wearing a T, but it’s been cold enough here the last few nights to make one necessary, as I don’t like having the heat on at night.

I can’t answer your bonus question based on experience, but I suspect pjs would not help you sleep. Worth trying, though.

cutiepi92's avatar

eh I don’t really wear many “formal” pajamas. I stick to a men’s t-shirt and panties. Super loose and comfy. I despise wearing pajama pants, but lately it’s been super cold so I wear them. They must also be super loose and lightweight. I have tried the whole sleeping naked thing, but it’s not comfy at all. I can sleep braless, but without underwear I feel super weird. Underwear is comforting lol. That and I need something on when I wander to the bathroom. My boyfriend wears a t-shirt and underwear as well (though boxers, obviously not panties lmao). I don’t understand the full sets though with the long sleeve shirts and night dresses and whatnot.

jonsblond's avatar

I wear cotton pajama pants to bed because they are soft and comfy. No, they don’t bunch. I wear a tank top or cami with them in the summer and a t-shirt in the winter. I also wear cotton panties under my pajama pants because I don’t want to wash my pajama pants every day. I love bundling up in comfy clothes!

I live in the Midwest and it gets very cold in the winter. I’m not going to get up to pee in the middle of the night with just panties on. I’d freeze my booty off. I also have children and it helps to be dressed if they need me in the middle of the night.

laurenkem's avatar

I keep my super-cute pajamas for when I’m just lounging around the house doing nothing (why, I have no idea, because I don’t think the cats really care). But when I go to bed, it’s a t-shirt and panties. These days, the hot flashes and night sweats sometimes cause me to wake up ripping my t-shirt off, but the panties always stay.

This runs in my family. I remember after my mama had knee surgery, I was in the hospital waiting for her and after she woke up from the anesthesia, her only request was that I put her panties on her, lol.

fightfightfight's avatar

I don’t wear pajamas when I sleep, I just walk around with them on in my house until I actually go to bed. I hate sleeping with too much stuff on so I only go to bed in a huge t-shirt and underwears. Oh yeah, and socks. Besides, there’s a heating vent in my room and sometimes it gets super hot.

ibstubro's avatar

Again, I laugh @Pachyderm_In_The_Room. Gourd forbid we wear something as pedestrian as PJs under our duvet. LOL

ibstubro's avatar

@fightfightfight How can you stand socks in bed? You don’t tuck your sheets?

Coloma's avatar

I’m in the no socks camp. Annoying! haha

livelaughlove21's avatar

I’m in the no socks and no tucked sheets camp. My feet are bare and at least one is outside of the sheets at all times. I don’t even use the top sheet. It’s just annoying.

dxs's avatar

My bed consists of a bottom sheet that’s tucked into the mattress and a top sheet that is not tucked in at all. It just sits there in a clump all day until I use it at night. I trained myself to sleep with socks on because my feet would get cold at night.

I have a 17lb. cat that sleeps on my feet and a his 7lb. little girl pal that sleeps on my head. I’m cozy.

fightfightfight's avatar

@ibstubro I don’t know, I guess I’m just used to it because I’ve always worn socks. Actually this summer, it got so hot that for once I tried sleeping without socks to see how it would feel but I felt uncomfortable the whole time! So then I tried it one more time after that and I still hated it, so now I know for sure I can’t sleep without socks! Oh yeah, I do tuck but I still like wearing socks :D

jonsblond's avatar

I keep reading fucked sheets. Please tell me I’m not the only one.

I can’t sleep in socks unless it feels like -20 outside and there’s a draft in the bedroom. Even then I’ll end up kicking my socks off at some point in the night. I also never tuck my sheets. I need to leave a foot hanging outside the sheet for some reason. Just one foot, not both. You can’t do that with tucked sheets.

Coloma's avatar

^^^ Right…wtf is wrong with people? You HAVE to have wiggle the leg out space. lol
I bet the sock sleepers hang their toilet paper UNDER, not OVER. just like tucking the fucking sheets. lololol ;-)

Pandora's avatar

@jonsblond LOL, I do that too. Never figured out why, I needed one foot free.Glad to see I am not the only one. I use to do it as a kid. I would keep one foot free so I could shake it back and forth and kind of rock the bed till I fell asleep. But I don’t do that anymore, and yet that foot has to be free unless it is really cold. Then it is under the blanket till I get hot and somewhere in the middle of the night it makes a run for it.

Unbroken's avatar

I do the foot or leg out at times. It is my temp regulator. When I am cold it is tucked inside, when I am hot it moves out and the hotter I get the more it moves out.

But I have to have a sheet most of the time. Even if there is no window open or fan air is always moving and when I am just laying there it becomes this sensation that is keeping me awake.

No I will not sleep in direct contact with a blanket flannel fuzzy or any thing that is blanket like and warm, I want the sheet to be soft and crisp cool when I get in and warm it up with my body and should I get too hot I will move to another part of the bed.

Oh another thing. I can now sleep with my head under a pillow or covers. When I was a child I always thought I might run out of air and not notice. So if my head was cold but the light was pouring in from the windows or it was loud I would leave a tunnel. But my cat changed all that. When she is pestering me at 4 in the morning my head is not just buried it is sunk… But I had to give her away this weekend and I am really quite sad about it.

28lorelei's avatar

Usually I just wear undergarments, but if it’s cold I do go for PJs (or if I’m staying at someone else’s place, or sharing a room with someone).
I also move my legs around sometimes, or put my hands under my pillow (if I’m turned over on my stomach- usually I sleep on my side).

JimTurner's avatar

It’s mainly an option not a requisite.

I only started wearing pajamas when I got married and had kids. You really never know when the little ones will run into the room and I think my wife is appreciative that I retire in some formal fashion.

laceymary's avatar

I have low blood pressure and I am always cold and I have no idea how people sleep without any clothes. I sleep in a hoodie and sweatpants all the time, feel super comfortable about it.

trev4326's avatar

I have been sleeping naked since I was 13, and although it freaked my parents out I just HATE wearing clothes to bed!!!
In fact since I was 16 I decided to go commando 100% of the time. WHY do I need underwear ever????? I like my boys free and not scrunched up. If I get a boner, so be it, deal with it people! LOL
And recently I started going sockless in my Vans or Nikes! TRY IT DUDES

downtide's avatar

I often wonder if people who go commando change and wash their jeans as frequently as they would change their underwear. And if not, ewwww.

zenvelo's avatar

@downtide Or when they go sockless, leave their shoes out where everyone else gets to enjoy the odor.

Unbroken's avatar

@downtide and @zenvelo I imagine it would depend on the person. But if people have odiferous habits or bad hygiene how does adding another layer of clothing actually help the people near by?

zenvelo's avatar

@Unbroken Wearing socks keeps the sweat from soaking in and permeating the shoes. It doesn’t quell the odor, but socks can be changed and washed daily, shoes not so much.

Unbroken's avatar

Sweat soaked socks stuffed in shoes don’t make them smelly? Why would someone have such sweaty feet?

downtide's avatar

@Unbroken Socks and underpants are usually washed more frequently and a fresh pair worn every day. You don’t wear a freshly-laundered pair of shoes every day.
