Do you think a live-action Batman/Superman film is a good idea?

“Great Question” (3points)

Based on the actors chosen to play the iconic roles, so far the movie looks like a complete disaster. Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Jeremy Irons as Alfred. Ben Affleck as Batman. And a supermodel as Wonder Woman. It’s all over the place.

I think a 2D animated Superman/Batman film directed by Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission: Impossible 4) would be incredible instead. Your thoughts?

Remember when everyone said Heath Ledger would be a terrible Joker? Well, now he’s everyone’s favorite. I’ll judge the movie after it’s made instead of before.

@SavoirFaire I was one of the few people who predicted that Ledger would do an amazing job as The Joker, his past performances were really varied. Eisenberg was fantastic in The Social Network, but I can’t see him as an intimidating presence among Batman and Superman. Unless he deepens his voice or something.

Apart from that model whose only claim to fame is basically the fast and the furious shit streak, I am not worried about the actors.
The problem is the director-producer combo Snyder/Nolan, that perpetrated the Man of Steel disaster.

rojo's avatar

@SavoirFaire Not everyone, I still prefer Jack Nicholson.

Isn’t Gail Gadot married to Chris Hemsworth (aka Thor)? That’s gotta count for something.

Seriously though, I have faith only because I do not believe, at this point in his career, that Ben Affleck would attach himself to a stinker.

Also, any movie in which superman is a main character is a dud.

IMO

Also, people give Affleck shit for his Daredevil movie.
I mean, come on. The movie was directed and written by Mark Steven Johnson, who in his career only made shit.
There is not much that an actor can do with such dreck.

rockfan's avatar

@ragingloli That’s why I think this movie is in really bad hands, Zack Snyder is an awful director, and he does a terrible job at directing actors on set.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@rockfan Perhaps they’ll be playing up the evil genius side of Luthor over other aspects of his character. It seems to me that Eisenberg can handle that no problem.

@rojo It doesn’t have to be literally everyone for the point to stand.

@rockfan
Yeah. A great director can elevate a bad actor, but a bad director can destroy a good actor.
It is the same with scriptwriters. That is what ruined the Prometheus movie.

rockfan's avatar

@ragingloli I absolutely loved Prometheus, it seems like I’m in the minority among sci-fi fans.

I think a superman/batman flick is going to super suck. I may take some heat for this but basically all the super hero movies in the last 30 years either sucked or we just ok. One exception would be the first Iron Man and possibly the batman from 1988. Hollywood does not seem to be putting out anything original these days.

rockfan's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me What do you think of Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins, and Hellboy?

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

All crap except batman begins was ok. I just could not get into the comic themed movies. I never read comic books as a kid either.

cookieman prefiction
The release date for Superman/Batman was just pushed back a year. I predict that Snyder will leave the project and Ben Affleck will direct as well as star.

There already is an animated movie. It’s quite amazing, two parts, you should check it out.

“prediction” not “prefiction”

A hugely expensive Amazing Spiderman II is the works now. It’s live action with cgi.

After the release of that movie I’d like to see a protracted hiatus of super hero films. I’m overwhelmed.

filmfann's avatar

The Dark Knight Returns is an animated film, based on the best comic book graphic novel ever written. It features a conflict between the Big Blue Boy Scout and the Dark Knight. No live action film will be better.
Side note: there is a moment in “Batman and Robin” when George Clooney makes a reference to Superman, and as much as that movie sucked, that line made the movie worse.
All that said, @SavoirFaire is right about everyone thinking Heath Ledger would suck, and yet he did what has to be considered the definitive version of the Joker. If done correctly, a Supes/BMan movie might be great.

@filmfann
“And that is why Superman works alone”?

rockfan's avatar

@uberbatman I already know about those, I meant a new animated film that’s released in theaters and directed by Brad Bird.

It’s a good idea for me if the right creative people are in charge. I couldn’t agree more with @ragingloli about Snyder, Goyer and Nolan. They were the worst team for Man of Steel. I don’t care if it made money. They desecrated the franchise.

I like the team-up but not the Sups vs Bats angle. WTF-? Another angst ridden characterization opus about the ups and downs and the dark side of being a superhero-? Enough please. Pitting these two against each other is the stupidest idea in today’s cinema. Maybe in comics it works.

So this is a terrible idea only because Snyder team and WB producers are not the right fit for this.

rockfan's avatar

@mazingerz88 I have a feeling that it won’t be a “Superman vs. Batman” type of story that everyone seems to be hoping for. I think they’ll have a conflict at first, but then reconcile and team up, and fight against a villain.

mazingerz88's avatar

@rockfan That is exactly what I don’t like about it. That bogus set-up of conflict that shall end up obviously in an alliance. I think it’s a tired unimaginative trope and a suitable writer and director should be able to come up with a more exciting and innovative idea on how to go about this huge double billing.
