I guy at work used to call me Skippy for no known reason. As it didn’t fit my personality at all, it never caught on. Never bothered me, either, so that wasn’t a factor.
Oddly enough the name Curtis has been a recurring theme in my life. To the point that three people that I knew fairly well called me that so consistently that I just answered to it. Not only does my name not begin with C, it’s doesn’t even begin with a ‘hard’ sound. Oh, and the 3 people never met each other and weren’t of the same race, sex or age.
Juels is one of them. The other is Doosenburger. As a child my siblings couldn’t pronounce Julie. It sounded more like Doolie. I had a boyfriend whose last name was Burger. We would play on his Sit N Spin. No joke, we were just toddlers. Eventually we became known as Doosenburger.
My nickname since I was a little girl is Kiki. A lot of my younger cousin’s couldn’t pronounce my name so I got stuck with Kiki. I like it. It’s cute and different. My Dad will sometimes call me Keek.
@SnoopyGirl . . . I have a 20 year old son named Kyle that I have called Keek for the better part of his life. Sometimes, depending on my mood, I call him Kiki and Kiki Beans.
I got mine because he couldn’t say my name and so he called me Lee lee. My neice got hers because my daughter couldn’t say her name and called her ga and my step-father got his nick name as beeper because she like it better than grandpa. She could say grandpa at the time she gave him is name just she like Beeper better.
Gigi, (jeejee) although that was mostly my parents calling me that. My dad did it enough so that when he used me whole name, it seemed alien.
Some friends call me that, and one friend calls me Jizz. (because of my name, not because I’m a huge tramp :p )
“Half-shot” because whenever my friends instigate a round I’ll usually request they pour me, or I’ll pour myself, half a shot. It’s also a reference to my height – I’m pretty short.
Never had a nickname either. Kinda happy about that, I find most to be pretty annoying.
@ibstubro I’ve had a similar experience. I’ve had quite a few different people call me Dominic, which isn’t even remotely close to my actual name. Maybe I just “look like a Dominic” whatever that means lol. I have two professors at school that are identical twins that both teach chemistry and more often than not dress pretty similar. The one brother for some reason thinks my name is Dominic but I never correct him. It’s an easy way to tell my professors apart :P
My family calls me Den. My boyfriend calls me Goji Business. Its a long cute story, but that is all he calls me now, almost never my name lol. Usually it’s just “biz”.
My sister has called me jerp since way before the internet. According to the urban dictionary it means: the act of having sex with fruits, vegetables, or small women that look like fruits or vegetables.
Glo is a nickname I had since childhood, although I’m the only one that ever really uses it anymore. My college roomies do, but we only talk once a year or so.
My husband has about ten for me. Tana, Nena, Juana, Juanita, Leslie, Chuleta, and a couple I can’t even remember, because I don’t know the Spanish. My real name can be shortened a couple ways and he uses both.
Many people call me by the shortest version of my real name.
Some people call me “Lonnieboy”. One of my older sisters for some unknown reason started calling me that and it stuck. Perhaps my first name is too short (Lon). Also my friend from college calls me “Kinnikinnick” (I suppose because it is similar to my last name).
A couple of friends at work call me Peabody (from the character on the Rocky & Bullwinkle show) sometimes because I have a head full of useless trivia and I know a little about a whole lot of different things. Kind of like Cliff Clavin from Cheers I guess.
I was the firstborn and nicknamed Andy (for Andrew) in toddlerhood. But from my teenage years on my mother call me “Bunch.” I have absolutely no clue why but I loved it. When writing or emailing her I often signed it Andy /#1 /Bunch.
@Pachy Your answer reminded me that my mom did not have nicknames really for me. She used J. Leslie once in a blue moon in a crowded place, but that was using my actual first initial and middle name. However, for my sister she had a few nicknames, one was Kumquat. I’m the first born.
My children all got stuck with nicknames.
The oldest was Kika, she couldn’t pronounce her name when she was younger and called herself Kika.
Middle was Magoo, because of her big eyes I think, sometimes called Magoo Chicken wings. She had long gangly arms and legs, especially compared to her sister who was a butterball.
The youngest was Landerberry boy. His name was Landon.
They all stuck well into
Adolescence. Magoo is now Aunt Goo to her nephews and nieces.
@Coloma My birth certificate says that my first name is “Lon”. How come no one ever asks “What’s Don or Ron or Jon short for?” Yet I’m so used to people asking me what “Lon” is short for and making fun of my name. Ha, ha, haaa!
@JLeslie Fare enough. Whatever.
Also while I was in an Army infantry unit they use to call me “KC” (short for my last name). Other non-vulgar names that people have called me: “Lonard”, “Lonz” and a crazy bitch in college insited on calling me “Loonie” (I never said an unkind word to her).
@gondwanalon I possibly would ask, “is Lon short for something?” Unless you are foreign, then I wouldn’t. If you look American, which I know is a ridiculous thing to say since there really is no such thing as looking American, then I would wonder what it is short for.
Why does it bother you? Maybe I shouldn’t ask such a thing? If someone is Bobbi I might ask if it is short for Barbara. Shellie for Michelle or Sheldon. I happen to know a Bobbi and a Shellie and their names are exactly that, not short for anything.
I had a niece that was born on the day Mt. St. Helens blew her top. She was to be named Emily Ann. When the doctor found out , he said. “Oh! Earthquake Annie.” They changed her name.
@gondwanalon You look Californian for what it’s worth. I don’t remember where you live. Very approachable, relaxed, and enjoy being active. That’s my impression. I would wonder about your name since it is unusual. Do you care to share where it is from or how your parents came up with it?
@JLeslie Good eye. I grew up in LA County California but live in Tacoma now. My last name is Irish but my family has been in the USA since the seventeen hundreds so I’m a genetic mix. Anyway I asked my Mom once why she named me Lon and she told me that she could not remember. No other Lon’s in my family. One of my Graddads was name Leo. Too bad that they didn’t name me Leo. That is such a bold and strong name.
@gondwanalon My grandmother insisted I was named after her mother and my mom says I was named after no one. I needed to know for my Jewish marriage license. I don’t even remember which name I finally settled on for the license.
Aside from ET, I have a lot of other nicknames. A lot of my friends refer to me as “Pendy” which is half of my last name.
Ash is a given.
Lurley from my pal @JoeyOhSoClever.
AshLeigh Bashley Small and Sashley from my sister.
My friend and I call each other “Slick” and “Slim”
Usually one of us will be like “Sup Slim?” And the other will say “Not much. How are you, Slick?”
Neither is specific to one of us. We’ve been calling each other them so often that we’ll both answer to either if we heard it yelled on the street.
@AshLeigh@Imadethisupwithnoforethought googled chubs to see any other meanings of the term. I saw that urban dictionary had some so I looked and promptly began laughing my ass off
And yet, when you meet a Marsha, do you not think, “Marsha, Marsha, Marsha” @Judi & @Juels?
People just have to practice a little restraint. lol There was a piece on NPR recently about how people GA music that has been modified to increase it’s repetitiveness.
I am from China, and many of us immigrants choose English names. Some such names reseemble our Chinese names. Some of my family began calling me Beth when I was a child. I suppose that is as close to my Chinese anme as possible.
Now you can call me Blonde, or you can call me J, or you can call me Johnny, or you can call me Blondie, or you can call me Wilcox, or you can call me Willie; now you can call me Blonde J, or you can call me BJ, or you can call me BSJ, or you can call me BSJ Jr. but you doesn’t hasta call me Blondesjon!
