I am dizzy from time to time, when I get up and when I stand. Also some times it just hits me when I am sleeping. What do I Have? My Dr. prescribed an expensive anti-histamine, but I can’t afford it. Do you have a poor man’s version for allergies?

Fair Warning! This is my “For Dummies” type of answer, I don’t have any sources or links to back me up.

First off, to answer, yes. Sometimes vessels tighten during allergies to slow down blood flow so that white blood cells can concentrate on whatever/where the allergy is. The idea of this is so that allergy won’t spread through the body etc as the body reads and fights off venom, bacteria, viruses, and pathogens.

So perhaps lack of blood flow from your allergies are causing the dizziness.

Hmm… My wife is a super-sensitive-allergy-prone-type

Typically her allergies come and go when she’s tired… and stagnant.

Question…

Are you working out? Are you getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day? When my wife works out she almost never has allergies, even when doing hikes and park workouts. However, if she were not to work out, and just maybe drive by the same areas, she would probably get allergy symptoms and what not.

@pleiades I hate mosquitos and it is to hot and expensive to go outside, often. I do sit ups at home.

Do you have a gym near your place? Not talking about like a 24 HR Fitness Center but like one of the cheaper ones? We have a CHUZE fitness here it’s like 10$. Just the basics, treadmill, dumbbells, most machines, just not super modern.

@pleiades We have a swimming pool and a gym. For me I get a free swim pass but I don’t know what to do so I sit in the hot tub and then sit in the pool then sit in the hot tub then go home. I will ask if I can get a free membership for the gym.

If it’s allergies, perhaps simply cleaning them out would help you. I’ve used a neti pot before and it’s amazingly helpful. You can buy a little ceramic pot for $15 US at many health food stores. I like ceramic because you can sterilize it. http://netipotguide.net/how-to-use-a-neti-pot/ or you can use a plastic squirt bottle such as this one for $12 US They recommend you replace the squeeze bottle every so often: http://www.walgreens.com/search/results.jsp?Ntt=walgreens neti pot sinus wash kit.

If you decide to do this, make sure to use Boiled distilled water People have died from not using sterile water, or using a dirty neti pot (you must sterilize it every time). It’s also helpful to use a high quality sea salt such as Celtic sea salt. The trace minerals will help your body heal.

Some people, like my sister and me, suffer severe pain when using the Neti pot. We have narrow eustachean tubes and discovered the hard way just how uncomfortable the Neti pot can be.

@talljasperman: Can you get an over-the-counter antihistamine like Benadryl or Zyrtec (available in the US)? Doesn’t your universal health care cover the prescription?

talljasperman's avatar

@gailcalled The free medication is not available for over the counter medications (even if I am on AISH) . I only have $5 free cash till the end of the month…. the rest of my money goes towards making it to my medical appointments. I have meals on wheels so I won’t starve.. I would like to see the $5 towards 4 liters of cola.

I find that Zyrtec (or cheap, generic version at Costco) is strong enough for me. Probably would help you.

If not, you can try what I did – cut out nitrates from food. Works for me – I have not had dizzy episodes in years.

Could be ear crystals, too. I had that doing situps & turning over in bed. Goes away in about three weeks.
