I think there can be several outstanding versions of a song, but I’m talking about versions so bland or poorly cadenced that you literally want to turn the radio off. I did just that earlier when a woman caterwauled her way through Little Town of B. When I turned it back on I got the 3–4 crappy versions so I just put in Harry Connick Jr. Xmas.

Funny you should ask; I just listened to a podcast this week on this very topic.

There is no good christmas music in the first place.

@ibstubro I agree. There are some really brilliant songs made horrible by the singers. I know it’s a matter of taste, but there are songs that are better off with one singer than another.

Yes, @Mimishu1995, and I don’t even mind a little genre bending. There was an example on NPR last week where a guy sang a normally sedate Christmas song really jazzy. I liked it, because it was well-done and different.

Maybe, part of the crappiness of the songs had to do with them being done “country” version style. ( I am not a country music fan.)

No @prairierose, because I do like country, and because it’s cross-genre. I had Christmas CDs and when I turned the radio off, I started playing crappy Judy Garland. Then crappy Diane Carroll. Settled on Harry Connick Jr., but Bing was next up.

Now I’m back to the country radio and it’s been non-offensive for over an hour. Mediocre? Maybe. Hideous? No.

The man with all the toys by The Beach Boys is still pretty good after 50 years.

I don’t get why so many depressing christmas songs are made. It’s a downer to have a music station on and hear stuff like “blue Christmas”.

Elvis doing Blue Christmas is not a downer. Made my day earlier, as a matter of fact.

I find both “Little Drummer” and “Town of Bethlehem” tedious if sung to the tradition cadence or slower.

How is “Blue Christmas” NOT a downer?
