Pandora introduced me to Kate Wolf about a year ago. She’s a Californian folk singer who died young.

Isn’t he something, @marinelife! I am listening to him right now, and I think I remember hearing (or hearing about) Talking Timbuktu, with Ry Cooder, but I was never prompted to investigate until now.

My teaching gig with the high school (I’m basically teaching rock and roll) has has prompted me to take a closer look at some artists I have previously overlooked, such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Plain White T’s, Sublime, and others.

@janbb I knew Kate Wolf. The last time I saw her perform, she had lost her hair due to chemo, and was wearing a multicolored clown wig on stage. My favorite song she sang is Some Kind of Love, written by John Stewart(musician) of the Kingston Trio

@Yetanotheruser I liked John Stewart’s solo works too. My favorite Kate Wolf’s songs are “Friend of Mine”, “Green Eyes” and the “The Trumpet Vine.”

@Yetanotheruser I was first introduced to the Plain White Ts on Fluther. Like them a lot. It’s funny that you should mention Talking Timbuktu. I asked a friend of ours who’s very into music if he had heard of Toure and he mentioned that he had a CD of him and Ry Cooder so I looked up Talking Timbuktu. Very glad to have found him.

I’m not sure how I learned about him, but my latest find is Bombino: Niger’s Tuareg guitar hero .

From Fluther I learned of PJ Harvey

Yea I went to a concert with some coworkers. It was a jamband/hippie festival and I’m not really into that stuff but I found a couple artists I actually like. Beats Antique and Polish Ambassador.

If you like Ali Farka Toure, you might also enjoy Amadou and Mariam. I discovered them both at a music festival some years ago. Great stuff!

It has been a while since I had a new music suggestion that has stuck with me, so I’m following with interest!

@janbb Yes! And she’s a Brit, which was a surprise to me when I found out.

@janbb So many Americans put on an accent when they sing, though. It’s not something I assume.

Oh – interesting. I tend to think of it the other way; that some English singers try to flatten their accent to sound more American but I don’t know any Americans who try to sing in a British accent.

@janbb You’re right – the reverse is true, as well.

@janbb @dappled_leaves When I sing certain songs, as part of the interpretation, I tend to take on the dialect in which the song was written, Irish, Scottish, British, Texan, Australian—My presentations of these dialects are far from perfect, but I feel they add to the interpretation of the song.
