Maybe Uwe Boll. Now I know what you’re thinking, I’m only saying that because he is reputed to be bad. But no. I have actually seen many of his movies. As a video game fan, I’m aware that most game movies are usually crap. Thing is, no matter how crap most are, you can see there is an attempt, an effort, a feel to the movoe that tells you the director at least tried.
Uwe tries a…different approach. He doesn’t even care how he makes the movie, he doesn’t even try to capture any essence from the game he’s making a movie of. Just the characters, who are fighting something. Watching his movies is basically like watching live action clips of video games. Ever seen House of the Dead? Christ, when the action scenes pop up, you actually just see action clips from the game itself. That’s terrible! Most zombie movies are pretty bad, (the more crappy they are, the better I like them, too) but when it’s boring me, there’s a problem. I’m not picky with zombie flicks.
In a way though…Uwe Boll kind of works. I mean, it’s fuckin video games we’re talking about here, most aren’t complicated. Maybe the reason why many game movies fail is because they try too hard. Uwe just doesen’t try. His movies are the equivalent of skipping a horror story just to see all the gore. Now I say he’s bad, because while most game movies suck, his approach still doesn’t work. But that’s not to say I don’t enjoy most of his movies. And I love Zombie Massacre. Although for the sake of technicality, he didn’t actually direct this one. I don’t know if that’s a redeeming factor though, because I love bad movies. Surely, not everyone does, though.
And yes, I’m aware not ALL his movies are game based.
