It depends on the conversation and purpose of that conversation. So with friends, I’d rather sit down and have a coffee or go for a walk in person. Although I have friends online, and it’s lovely to chat with them via text.
For my teaching work, I prefer students email me. I can then deal with their queries when at my convenience and putting my responses in writing means there’s a record of what I said. This hopefully means less ambiguity and misunderstandings.
For my research work, I like the telephone or face-to-face conversations. This allows me to drill down and really try to understand what the person I’m speaking to is communicating.
For general business, again, writing (email) is preferable but email is easy to ignore, so the telephone or in person is often the best option.
