What bizzare thing do you remember eating as a kid?

I remember munching on crayons, eating Elmer’s glue that I had spread on my desk and let dry to a thin ‘skin’ (sometimes mixes with eraser noodles’), and Play Dough we had let dry on the heat register.

The crayons stick to your teeth badly.
The glue tastes pretty much like it smells, only saltier.
Play Dough is very salty, and much better dry than wet.

A bar of Ivory Soap. It was at a cottage we rented one summer. A bunch of us wanted to be blood brothers and sisters but didn’t want to cut ourselves, so we each snitched a bar of soap from our moms and sat behind the cottages and ate some every day til we’d finished our bar.

ibstubro's avatar

Wow, That’s cool story, @BellaB! Who’s idea was that? Did you each eat the same sized piece every day?

MrGrimm888's avatar

Ants. Not all the time. But I remember once (very, very young,) when I noticed a bunch of them on my arm. So I liked them up,and ate them.

I haven’t even thought about that for SO long…

I might have been behind the soap idea. I wouldn’t want to say. Just in case.

We all sat and nibbled on our soap for about 15 minutes each afternoon when our mothers were inside the cottages. We all finished the same week. I can’t believe that we didn’t have any stomach troubles as a result.

I used to visit my aunt in Yorkshire. The ice cream man would sell pots of mushy peas and you’d dip a sherbert lollypop into them.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^I think I’ve eaten those sherbert lollipops before. What the Hell are mushy peas? Obviously, I assume that they’re mashed up peas. Are they cold? You said an ice cream guy sold them.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Mushy peas are served hot. They’re an English thing. You can buy tins of them here in Australia too. I think they have baking soda added to break them down more I guess. And they’re marrow peas which are cooked with a little sugar (I believe). Fish and chips and mushy peas is something of an institution in the UK. Why the ice cream man sold them I have no idea. I think it was a local thing. I’ve never seen it anywhere else. I prefer my peas natural and non-mushy personally. However, I do recall liking mushy peas and lollypops as a little kid.

It should be sherbet too not sherbert! :D

Look at the comment from Richard in Penistone. He mentions some guy going around sellling mushy peas from a van. Perhaps it was this guy?

Bizarre only in the sense of eating at a very young age: platinos, fried plantain slices sold by a street vendor in Panama. And, snails, my mom didn’t call them escargot until I was older.

Ants.

I used to love glue as well in first grade. To me it tasted like coconut.

After reading the book “How to Eat Fried Worms” in elementary school, I had challenged a classmate and lost the challenge and had to eat a worm. I don’t really remember what it tasted like, as I swallowed it like a pill.

I drank ants the other day. They got into our water chiller thingy. I didn’t notice until I got to the end of the glass of water and went ‘wtf!!’ Yuck. Protein I guess.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Yeah. I am surprised I didn’t get sick eating ants. But it was a short term thing,at a very early age.

ibstubro's avatar

I know what ants taste like, @MrGrimm888 & @dxs & @Earthbound_Misfit. Sorta vinegary.

I had a feeling you might have instigated it, @BellaB! Ivory is pretty mild.

That’s so disgusting, @Earthbound_Misfit! lol

I always wanted to try snails, @zenvelo. Restaurant, not just straight out of the can.

I ate a raw oyster that way, @Escha. Once.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Ha! We eat raw oysters here every month that permits it.

I like mine with hot sauce, or drawn butter.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I know @ibstubro. I wasn’t happy, but I’m sure the ants were even more unhappy.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Yes. Oh ,I wish I never ate them. But I was far too young to understand the ramifications of my actions. At the time, I was probably 3 years old…

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Well people sell chocolate coated ants and crickets and the like are food stuffs in some countries. I’m sure I’ll live @MrGrimm888 and you’re still here, so further proof that ant eating is not deadly.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Lol.

I would probably eat some insects still, if properly prepared.

One of my favorite foods is Crawfish . Heavily spiced, after boiling .

There’s not much difference in them and bugs.

ibstubro's avatar

Yeah, apparently 4 of us here have eaten ants will no ill effects.

The thought of eating a chocolate cover cricket gives me the willies, @Earthbound_Misfit. Sure, like Orientals eating baby chicks in the egg! Bleh, spit, retch. There’s crunchy, and then there’s crunch.

What bug is going to be big enough to only eat the innards, @MrGrimm888? You don’t eat the crawdad’s shell.

I admit the idea of soft shell crabs disgusted me, and they are delicious. And the local Asian buffet serves salt and pepper shrimp with the shell on, but the shrimps are small, so the shell isn’t too hard.

I may have once eaten a chocolate covered grasshopper? Did not enjoy it, but it was disgusting like cricket! ;-)

Leaves. I’d eat leaves right off the trees in the backyard. I even had a favourite-tasting tree. No idea what kind it was, though.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Gonna call you Wombat from now on. Eats, roots and leaves. Sorry – I just felt some hilarity was in order. Or maybe hysteria has set in.

As a baby, my nephew once dipped his cheddar cheese stick in his blueberry yogurt. My sister ans I were all, “Ewww!” Then our eye met, and we were, “Maybe we should try it.” Was good.

I never intentionally ate anything weird but…as a kid in the 60’s when Jello molds were the in thing, well….
My aunt made this hideous tomato aspic jello salad. It was revolting!
She made it every holiday. It was a blob of V-8 juice jello full of bits of nasty like black olives and celery and god knows what all, served on a bed of butter leaf lettuce.

I was forced to eat this horrible concoction and spent hours devising ways to mash it up on the stealth and hide some of it under the lettuce leaves or spit some into my napkin. That shit haunts me to this day. haha

ibstubro's avatar

Tomato aspic Jello is the only Jello I would eat if Jello were not dead animal hides.
Yummy!
