What is a pretty useless way to kill time?

Pretty straight forward.
I know, playing computer games, watching reality tv and online shopping without actually purchasing anything you need are pretty useless. So what would you do to kill time in a useless manner.
The rule is not to do anything that would require any real mental or physical benefits. Nothing that is really helpful in the scheme of things.

I didn’t make it back in time to correct my post. Upon more thought, computer games can be beneficial if it is complex and requires abstract thinking.

The only things that I can think of that would be a total waste of one’s time are:
Sleeping all day.
Sitting in a bar and drinking from morning to night.
Smoking pot from morning to night.

Even doing crossword puzzles or staring out into space and thinking about nothing is more beneficial than that, but a lot of people do it. I’ve always suspected that people who sit in bars all day make up the working class Republicans. Go into any dive and the opinions are more often than not rightwing and far rightwing. Eventually they become so pickled and their minds so permanently clouded they vote against their own interests.

I kill time by editing film and photos for kicks, researching the finer details of history for a little more than kicks, sketching, writing, playing an old git, playing with my dogs, working sudoku and crossword puzzles, and staring out into space while listening to music.

Masturbation – it wastes time and you feel good when you’re done.

Watching the inauguration tomorrow.

-Playing online dress up games
-Arguing on YT (or anywhere else) comment section, especially of the argument has no point nor sense whatsoever.
-Watching vloggers’ videos, like “my whatever routine” or “this generic event that no one really cares about, where I could’ve had a decent time if I turned off my damn camera”
-Reading the list articles, usually named “X number of reasons/ways to achieve or know about something you didn’t give a crap about before we mentioned it” (looking at you, Cracked. You’re not even funny anymore.)
-Watching people playing video games
-Going to social networks only to scroll and see what others have uploaded, without posting anything yourself or talking to anyone (bonus points if it’s an image board, like 9gag or Instagram or Pinterest or something like that)
-Going to TV Tropes (you do learn something new along the line, but is pretty much a waste of time)
-Sitting on the toilet and thinking about your life
-Looking at a clock
-Sleeping the whole day
-Eating because you’re bored, not because you’re hungry

Why are you condemning certain activities as useless, while at the same time actively asking for suggestions for them, and assuming that we have suggestions for intentionally doing both those things?

My perspective is that I get to choose what I consider a worthy thing to do or not, and that part of that for me is identifying judgements and stigmas I or others may have and deciding in what ways I may agree or disagree with them.

What strikes me as even more alien to my sentiments is the idea of seeking an activity that you also condemn – what’s that about? Is it really uselessness you seek, or is it freedom from worry about practicality and/or sense of obligation or responsibility? Is it about wanting to claim time & attention for diverting activities without concern for practicality?

I think that John Lennon said, “Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time”.

^^^ I was going to post exactly the same quote @gondwanalon.

Well even sleep is beneficial. I was thinking, like counting pennies and wrapping them up and never touching them. (Sadly I have some rolled up coins that have been just sitting there for some years now.)
@Sneki95 Yes, watching other people play games. Unless you have a bet going or are looking for clues on how to beat the game.
Sitting on the toilet is only a waste of time if you aren’t producing anything. LOL
@Espiritus_Corvus Agree on the Inauguration @ragingloli That is a huge waste of time, them and trolls, @lightlyseared Yes, it seems that is true as well.
@Cruiser, fishing is only a waste of time if you don’t enjoy it and you don’t eat the fish, or catch any worth eating. I’m not a big fan of fishing but even less so if I don’t catch any worth eating. Then I feel I wasted my time.

Jigsaw puzzles

Pandora's avatar

@filmfann, Especially those new ones that are blank. I like creative online jigsaws. There is on on MSN that times 3 puzzles and you get one piece at a time without seeing what it looks like and you quickly have to put them together before the time runs out. I think its very useful in sharpening your mind. You have to quickly take in all details and figure out where to place the piece. You are only allowed a certain amount of mistakes or you start back to the first puzzle.

Ok @Pandora Then I will change my answer to watching TV while on vacation.

I’ve never liked the idea of “killing time.” These precious minutes could be your last.

@Cruiser, I’m combining yours…
watching fishing on tv.

Going on Facebook and just strolling down looking at selfies.

Sometimes I really don’t know why I do that.

@Patty_Melt Babe Winkleman was an awesome way to waste time!

Pandora's avatar

@Patty_Melt I agree, that would be an awful waste of time. I feel the same way about watching golf, bowling or violent sports like boxing or wrestling or reality tv.

@MooCows . Yeah, there really would never be a reason to do that. Especially since you never know if the new ones coming back from their hole are new or were already counted. LOL
@Cruiser True. Especially when you are in another country and you don’t understand what they are saying or when there are a ton of repeat in between commercials about the hotel you are in. I never get why they advertise so hard about the hotel you are currently staying in. After the first few commercials you feel like you are dying a little bit at a time.

Pandora's avatar

@dappled_leaves I would agree but it made me laugh so I’m not sure it’s a waste of time.
Now that I wrote that, I am going back to watch them again.

I think of Facebook as a waste of time. I’m on it on and off all day and I find it enjoyable in a mindless way. It can be useful somewhat because it’s a communication tool but the majority of what’s on there can be done without.

Blow up a thousand ballons. I thought I was doing something funny for my daughter. When she gets home from a sleep over tomorrow they will be everywhere. I’m about three hundred in, and starting to feel the joke is on me.

lentil's avatar

I pretty much feel like I’ve wasted my day every time I realize just how long I’ve been playing the Sims for. I’d say that’s a pretty useless way to kill time.
