Sure. I don’t make a habit of it, but I’ve done this – many times.
I watch Wimbledon tennis from time to time, and I can pretty much count on one hand the number of times that I’ve actually played tennis – nor do I watch much other tennis, or follow the news of any players or standings / rankings, etc.
I’ve watched Australian Rules Football, as well as rugby, a couple of times each. Sometimes it’s because I’ve got a few minutes to kill and don’t want to start a book or movie, and sometimes it’s because a friend has recommended it.
I’d love to watch some cricket with good commentary to get some understanding of match and test play.
And I’ve watched a bit of golf, too, but that is far less interesting to me – even though I do golf more than any of those other sports – because television doesn’t very well capture the mechanics of the game that interest me. I don’t mind watching golf “how-to” videos, which are far more interesting than match play on television.
