I have never been very good at learning foreign languages—in fact, in college, I had to write some very lengthy, scholarly dissertations in place of the language requirements.
I would be very interested in learning a Scandinavian language, especially Norwegian which seems best mutually intelligible among the four Scandinavian languages—and I am also interested in Yiddish because of my family’s Jewish heritage and it seems kind of exotic and unusual to me. I like Friesian languages because they are close to early English and to Dutch and the North German and Danish provinces. I am interested in the Celtic languages as well—though again, my ability to learn the languages even though I have studied the languages and cultures extensively has not helped me with learning the languages.
Most people all over the world understand some English, and I believe that English will eventually become the universal language. But I find many languages quaint, charming, and dripping with the true essence of the indigenous cultures they stem from, so I hate to see them disappearing. Would like to learn Norwegian, Yiddish, and some Frisian language.
As for the fantasy languages, I find the Elven tongues very interesting, and of the Star Trek languages Vulcan seems well developed and worth learning—but I’d learn Elven first
