Is 13 Reasons Why actually trying to be helpful, or are they just doing things because they can?

13 Reasons Why is a television show that’s supposed to “start a conversation” about rape and suicide. I’m not done with the second season, but I’ve heard there is a school shooting scene, 2 suicides, and, most disturbing, a scene where a high schooler gets a mop handle shoved up his butt. I’ve seen this scene, and it is about a minute long and very graphic and detailed.
The first season even showed the girl killing herself (cutting her wrists) in detail, with her in the bathtub, all that.
I’ve heard that the show talked to Mental health professionals to get advice on how to approach these things.
I do not think that what they are doing is what the professionals suggested. It’s too graphic. Who thinks “Let’s target a show for teens in high school, and show multiple rapes, murder, and suicides, that’ll start a good conversation!”?
Seems like they are doing this for attention. I don’t understand why else they would be doing this.

Information for discussion should be provided without making a “thriller” entertainment medium about it.

My church youth group discussed some pretty graphic situations with suicide, rape, abuse.Human Trafficking Discussion can be pretty sobering and you have the support of a group and counselors around you. That’s the best way to do it

It doesn’t need to be a T.V. series.

My concerns about shows like this is that it “glamorizes” what is a really sad thing. We have already seen that school shootings are a source of incentive for other disturbed individuals. We had Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2 in which we follow idiotic children that got pregnant through their deliveries and all the idiocy of trying to be adults brings on. It sends the message that getting pregnant at 16 really isn’t a bad thing and can, in fact, end you up on MTV.

Apparently the school shooting scene is just a kid who considered it but didnt go thru with it… I dont know still bad timing.

Shows like this create more problems than solving them!

The only thing that matters is, does it make money for Netflix?

I don’t watch shows like this because I don’t want to help promote such stuff. I don’t see it as promoting conversation as much as I see it as an instructional video. If nobody watched, it will fade away into oblivion.

I don’t think it’s a good show. I think it might even trigger the kids who are suicidal or suffering from depression. The seem to romanticize suicide on that show! >:(

Seriously, what is the problem?
You have shows glorifiying a meth makers, vigilantes, and general violence and murder.
How is this any different?

I also don’t watch shows that glorify the underbelly of society. Occasionally some general violence may slip in but it’s seldom in a glorified way. When there’s NO market, the sponsors pull out too!!! Without sponsors the shows are doomed to fail!!!

@ragingloli Maybe has to do with the fact that a lot of these things are touchy subjects, and it seems that rape, suicide, and self-harm are more sensitive topics then murder, aside from school shootings.
Add in that this is all set in a high school, and geared towards people who tend to have more (I don’t know how to word this, so this may not be the best word) “Knowledge”(?)? of these topics? I only say that because lots of teenagers tend to be depressed and/or have tried or known someone whose either harmed themselves or tried to kill themselves. (A girl at my school did on Monday morning) Plus, school shootings are taking place mainly in High schools vs grade/middle schools

I don’t think knowledge was the right word but I just mean that it seems these topics occur mainly with teenagers in high schools although I know it happens to adults as well.
Plus, the protest against this show are mainly from teens who find rape and suicide to be very triggering topics, and are highly disturbed by what they are hearing is in this show.
