Do other countries besides the US play their national anthems before sporting events?

“Great Question” (4points)

For example, does France play La Marseilles before a soccer match? Does Israel play Hatikva? Does Great Britain play God Save the Queen? Does German play <whatever it is>?

or is this largely a US phenomenon?

not asking about Canada – we know they follow what the US does

Our national football & rugby teams (England) sing the anthem (which i loathe) right before the games start, in contrast to other sports where it is played immediately after a British win such as just now when Lewis Hamilton won the Italian GP.

@ucme that seems to be a difference between international competitions and leagues with teams mostly from one country.
Or did you mean that the England teams sing their anthem before a game in international competition, and other teams do not sing theirs?

@elbanditoroso
The song is called “Deutschland über alles”, which literally translates to “Germany First!”, and no, only during international events.
Shit, I hope.

@dabbler Yeah perhaps I should have stated all national teams for those that couldn’t distinguish through lack of knowledge.

Oh lord. Is that where America First came from? I thought it was an American slogan back in the early 1900’s before Trump used it. Although, I think McCain used Country First. Not the same. I think it’s a reference to serving one’s country, but I could see people interpreting it different ways.

We do in Canada, especially at NHL hockey games.
