Have you ever tried to solve a problem by having a written conversation with yourself?

This may sound a little loopy, but I have done this for recreational math problems and I find the technique to be productive. It is helpful for generating ideas. I have noticed that initial ideas tend not to be used, but it helps to lead to better ideas. The flow of ideas is definitely not smooth.

I have never seen this technique recommended by anyone. It lends itself to logic puzzles, but I can imagine using it to solve less well defined problems. It could possibly be used as an adjunct to keeping a journal. Any thoughts on this?

No.
I do have a closet of clones, though.

Yes. And it worked out very well by allowing me to see it from a different angle. I’m considering doing it again.

No exactly a dialog as if writing character voices, but I have certainly used writing to figure out many things in various subjects. It’s a bit like talking to someone about a problem. Having to commit ideas to words can help clarify what you’re thinking and give you different perspectives than if you keep it in your thoughts.

Sounds good to me. I have also had verbal discussion with myself….after drinking too much beer!

When I’m sober, though, I am a fan of Pro / Con lists.

Yes I’ve used this technique to solve complex problems.

Which of two complex medical procedures offered to me do I choose? Made a list of the positive, negative and unknown aspects of both operations through research and brainstorming.

Works good with mechanical engineering while thinking things through with detailed sketches.

Sleeping on it is pretty good too. Sometimes I wake up with the answer right there in front of me.

Kind of. There have been times when I have a programming question I’m trying to solve and so I try to write out the problem in a detailed manner. Often the process of doing so leads to the answer.

Never tried it, but I love the idea and will give it a shot.

Yes. That is how I used to pick my classes and my budget. Mostly numbers, grades needed ect. Also to do lists.
