The worst part about being aboard a sub it the ladder going down from topside.
I did liberty runs to and from one sitting offshore a few days.
The academy gets ships to come for first hand observation by me midshipmen. When that happens boat division takes UBs loaded with mids out and back, and sailors who have liberty ashore.
The UB crew had to hang out while the mids took a tour. Breakfast and lunch on board. One time it was a sub. I went below with some of the fleets and hung out they got me a glossy 8×10 of the ship, and a yeoman who could forge the captain’s signature wrote a naughty autograph. I sat high atop a huge pipe chatting. I asked if I could see a torpedo. They asked what did I think I was sitting on. :-D
It never felt like I was on or under water. The food was good. The radio techs had a Baltimore rock station tuned in.
I was wishing we could go for a spin, but hanging out during six tours a day was fine.
I would not make a choice. I want to be greedy and do both, fly, and submerge.
