No, it doesn’t sound funny to me. The idea of a military force for space has been around for a very long time, and it might as well be called Space Force.

“Funny” in the sense that it sounds like it comes from a C-grade, straight-to-vhs Asylum movie.
And they even plagiarised the Starfleet (which is much better name, btw) insignia from Star Trek.

It’s a grandiose title for an organisation that maintains the GPS system and military communication satellites.

I think it sounds funny because it almost sounds like make believe, or right out of a movie. Plus, we aren’t fighting in space, but really it’s not a bad name.

I don’t see why they simply didn’t make NASA part of the uniformed services like NOAA and PHS? Why have Space Force and NASA?

@JLeslie NASA is a civilian and scientific organization. Space Force comes from the Air Force Space Command and is a military organization. Different missions.

It’s like asking why is NOAA not run by the US Navy? Totally different missions.

@JLeslie Well, if you want to deep dive, the wikipedia article is reasonably informative. Whether it’s “needed” or not I suppose goes into a matter of opinion. I don’t feel strongly about it one way or the other, but it’s important to know what the facts are and not just snicker at the name and insignia. It is staffed with men and women who take their jobs very seriously. And the Russians and Chinese have similar forces.

@Caravanfan Do you mean I snickered? I said it sounded funny, but I also said it’s really not a bad name. I didn’t comment on the insignia, I think it’s fine. It does remind me of Star Trek, but I have no problem with that.

I take our uniformed services very seriously. My father spent his career in the PHS.

One point that I’m not sure you’re aware of, most people aren’t, is NOAA and PHS are uniformed services and have commissioned officers. They use Navy rank, Navy uniforms, just a different insignia, and get all military benefits. My dad retired as an 06, a Captain. Even a Navy man would mistake him for a Navy officer. NASA is not part of the uniformed services and probably should be.

I knew that the PHS was a uniformed service, but I didn’t know NOAA was a uniformed service. Thanks for the education!
