I have several times performed ‘The Long and Winding Road’ whenever I’ve done karaoke at a work party, church or school carnival.
I lost a girlfriend once whom I loved intensely—when she moved away. She moved on with her life, I did not. But I always wanted her to accept me again and wanted to be reconciled with her.
I became an Anglophile in my mid-to-late teens, looked and acted and spoke British or at least mid-Atlantic, and have ever since. I enjoy the beauty of the colourful, late-afternoon landscapes, British and Appalachian U.S. which that song excites in my imagination—the architecture, the glorious skies and hills. Even though I always feel hopelessly separated from the one who inspired these feelings and atmospheres in the first place.
And, I always sing it for her.
