For fun, can you think of movies that would plot totally different with the technology and conventions of today?

“Great Question” (4points)

I watched “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” recently and it sparked this question. At one point, Tracy hits a car in a parking lot fairly badly and the owner yells, “This will cost me $30 or $40 to fix!” So Tracy gives him $50 to cover it. At another point, Tracy calls his secretary and asks her to call the library and ask them to research Dr Prentice, the character played by Poitier. No Googling! And I question whether today, the age disparity and the quickness of the romance would be more of an issue to the parents than the race.

I’ve often thought “An Affair to Remember” would have been totally changed if they could have just texted each other they were late!

What movies and changes can you cite?

Just about any with some kind of action and not just talk. As you watch older movies, just mentally put working cellphones in the hands of the characters and watch the plot dissolve. This goes especially for the ones where someone utters the fateful words “Let’s split up,” which always herald trouble.

Come to think of it, this drastic change in cultural behavior—the addition of cellphones to almost everyone’s toolkit—must put a lot of pressure on scriptwriters these days. Maybe I should be more forgiving when they introduce rude devices to nullify them, such as having them lost, stolen, run over, or with suddenly depleted batteries.

Any movie where they are running around trying to find a phone booth so the kidnappers can call them.

How about “Citizen Kaine”? “I just Googled “Rosebud” and you know what, it was his sled!”

Almost anything.

Wizard of Oz.
Tarzan
Casablanca

Can you imagine if Robert De Niro were driving an Uber in Taxi?

What about if Tom Hanks had the “real” internet instead of AOL in You’ve Got Mail?

janbb's avatar

@elbanditoroso Of course, almost anything but it is specific examples that would make this a fun Q. That’s what I’m looking for.

Would love to see Charleston Heston as Moses texting God that they’re ready to cross and Rameses is close behind so He better spilt open the sea right then and there! Suddenly, Rameses’ attack-aerial drones zoom up from behind the hills ready to fire. Meanwhile, God is debating abortion rights in Twitter.

My daughter’s friends have never seen “Home Alone” with McCaulay Culkin as little Kevin who gets left home alone while the family travels at Christmastime. Nowadays, the mother would text him, telling him what to do, she’d get a relative to go over there and get him, or a neighbor to watch him, all via text.

My daycare called it “Lome alome.”
