I just did a quick search, and there sure are a lot of recipes! green tomato cake, tomato soup cake, tomato spice cake, tomato soup spice cake- it’s a long list! I think I’ll try a couple!

I’ve never heard of it. Sometimes tomatoes are very cheap here. I never thought to google for a cake recipe.

Edit: Just reading a recipe the tomatoes need to be peeled and seeded, so that is sort of a hassle. Another recipe says it’s not necessary to peel, but unclear if she still takes the seeds out.

You mean pizza?

@ragingloli No tomato bread, like zucchini bread or pumpkin bread.

There are several savory tomato cakes. In this case I guess the difference between cake and bread is texture and moisture. Tomato cake would be soft and moist.

I haven’t. Doesn’t even make me want to look for one.

There is a children’s book called Thundercake that includes a recipe. Basically a chocolate cake with tomato in the batter. Have not tried it.

It was an invention of the depression when they had little to no fruits or veggies.

@Dutchess_III It sounds like they must have had plenty of tomatoes? Maybe it was a way to use tomatoes when too many were ripening too fast. I usually cook them when that’s going to happen.

Some recipes used tomato soup for the cake, which maybe was something cheap that a lot of people had in their pantry, I don’t know.

I was thinking what do the tomatoes replace in the cake? Probably some liquid and maybe some oil. I guess the acid helps it rise if combined with baking soda. I use apple sauce like that and I cut the amount of sugar a little too.

No, but now I’m intrigued.

Just googled it.
Would totally try it.
