I would start thinking about a new job. (my job is ending in almost a year. I knew it was coming- a 1 year contract has turned into 5.). Knowing your job is ending puts you ahead of the game in terms of preparing financially and finding something else to do.

I would first line up my next job. Then I would continue to work hard for my current company unless they started acting disrespectfully or dismissively towards me, in which case I would have no objections to scaling back my productivity. I would also save more money in case my lined up job fell through or in the case where I couldn’t line one up.

Celebrate the end of disease and ill health and look forward to years of healthy living.

I would start looking for a new job and start saving hardcore, just in case.

If I knew I had a full year? I’d probably start building a small business.

I’d try and get another one lined up, and during the year I’d also take on another part-time job and save as much as humanly possible. Then, I’d us the funds to take 3 months off to travel in between the two jobs.

I think it will. I have a plan B and a plan C. Both involve essentially freelancing. For months now I have been collecting names of people who asked me if my services were available on a freelance basis, and I’ve said not now, but it probably won’t be long.

All along (for years) I have forced myself to keep up with networking, even though that kind of self-serving tit-for-tat relationship really isn’t my style, and I have helped a number of colleagues with referrals and contacts. So when it’s my turn I won’t be starting cold.

I save good samples of my work, and I keep my resume up to date.

I would also take care of as much medical business, from root canals and crowns to elective surgeries, as I could stand to do while I still have good coverage, and apply for credit cards or anything else where they are going to ask my salary, while I still have one.

Make as many contacts in the company as you can. Finding work is all about who you know. Most everyone one this site has gotten a job through a friend before.
Achieve as many things at work as you can to improve your resume.
Save money in case you have a period that you’re not working.

You can do a lot in a year’s time.

I’d be happy that I could even get a job to last that long – I’m a temporary worker. Just look for another job about a month or two before you know the contract will end.
