Turning my friend’s old Pentium III into his first Linux experience. Unfortunately, Ubuntu – my go to distro – does not support the 3DLabs graphics card. After much tooling around on the command line and Google, I thought I’d ask the Fluther.

you could try a lighter version of ubuntu- like Kubuntu or Xubuntu, or even Fluxbuntu if you really wanted to go bare bones

He’s not saying that it just doesn’t run well, he’s saying that the operating system does not support his video card.

3Dlabs website says it doesn’t have any Linux drivers for Oxygen XV1. I did find a glint driver (xserver-xorg-video-glint), which referenced 3DLabs, in my repositories, which I managed to install in the command line but was unable to get working.

At this stage I am looking for a Linux OS that is robust enough for a new user (not DSL) and will look good at the same time (not vesa drivers).

So far I’ve tried Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS. :( and :(
