Is a Financial Career a detriment to a possible Future Political career?

I love Finance and plan to enter either Investment Banking or Trading upon graduating from college. I also want to be heavily involved in politics later on in my life (Big Politics like a Senator).
Does anyone feel like it would be an advatage or disadvantage tp having a career in Finance before politics? (I guess people might think me to be disconnected and only worried about the bottom line).

Personally I believe the best type of politic is someone who has been in and run businesses or Finance because they are able to understand complicated things and explain them to people (their clients) but are always aware of the bottom line and the importance of it and efficiency.

I think our society should run less like a business. I am sure it wont be a detriment for you, most people only care about the bottom line.

I would never ever vote for you if you worked in those industries. The corruption runs so damn deep. I got a degree in economics and my fist and only job in that field was so fucking corrupt that it took about two months for me to have problems sleeping at night because I was told to do fucked up shit that was really wrong.

@johnpowell From where I am sitting, I have the impression that the members of congress are already in the hands of corporate money. I don’t know. Would it make a difference?

I think you need to do what draws you now and worry about later, later. Many people in politics have come from the world of finance – Goldman, Sachs to be precise. Look at Jon Corzine and Hank Paulson.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s financial career doesn’t appear to have held him back any. I’ll bet he’ll be running for a Senate seat to represent NY State by 2013.
