My fastest was 6:01 in the 8th grade. And that was with practice. Then I started smoking so it is probably about 15 minutes now. You are probably only to get anecdotal data here.
I run a mile in between 7–8 minutes at a pretty comfortable pace. I think that’s about average for most people my age in a somewhat healthy physical condition.
best mile i did was 4:59 about 4 years ago, if i went for a mile right now i think id be around 6:00 as it’s been about 4 years since i did any serious running. But i think around 7 mins is a decent average time.
It takes me about 15 minutes to run a mile. Uh, the one time I did it… I can hike for miles and miles, but as soon as I’m jogging, it’s bad news bears! So considering that 15 should be on the slow side, and 7 would be average for someone who runs occasionally, I feel like 10–12 minutes would likely be around the national average. Considering most Americans probably don’t run a mile very often… :)
Despite spending a crazy amount of time in the gym, my best time running a mile is probably around 9 minutes. It’s something I’ve wanted to improve, but my pesky achilles tendon in my right foot just won’t let me (that, and my shin splints).
In any case, I’m more of a stamina than a speed guy (I can spend an hour on the elliptical at a decent pace and feel great afterwards).
I run almost every day and the fastest I’ve ever done a mile is 8:48. But I have been building up my distance rather than speed. I doubt I could run it faster than 7:30 or so, even if wild things with fangs were chasing me.
i do 3.5 miles in like 40 minutes. i guess i could be faster for a 45-year-old male, but i’m working on it. an iron-man friend of mine who does triathalons says (when training) it’s all about how long you can endure a run at a “conversation” pace. that is to say, how long can you run without thinking or worrying how fast.
When I take my PT tests bi-annually in the military, I run 1.5 miles in about 11:30. When I’m doing my casual running several days a week, my average 1.5 mile run is around 14:30. Not bad, in my opinion, for a 42 year old diabetic with bad knees and missing a lobe in my right lung.
Excluding all the many Americans who cannot run or jog (or possibly even walk) a mile, apparently men at the gym typically have their treadmills set to about 7 miles per hour, or 8:30 minutes per mile. Women seem to set their treadmills a tad slower on average.
Olympic runners generally run a mile in less than 4 minutes.
My best mile was in 11th grade and was 4:40 which unfortunately still kept me in JV. I had a group of guys about 5–10 seconds ahead of me who I cold never catch. Now, at age 45 and not having had run since then I can’t even run a mile. My back is bad from an accident and I’m just plain lazy. I found these posting becaue I was think of trying running again. If I could get to a 10 minute mile that would be really good. Thanks
