There are recent studies that support the idea that when we dream we are peeling the emotional context off something difficult to cope with or adapt to.
People with PTSD – like Viet Nam vets who wake up in terror believing they are still in combat are having a failure of the process. The term – lets sleep on it, it will clarify in time may relate to this process.
People deprived of rem sleep get all kinds of nasty side effects, but the most important relates to learning. When someone tells you a joke, and it reminds you of another similar one – this is due the way your brain stores things. Its organized by links of degrees of similarity. You may see peoples minds wander on tangents, they are actually jumping similar links.
If this were related – coping with something difficult, or a learning process then ask yourself this…
What does the dream relate to in real life. Are there similarities you hadn’t considered, but are struggling with. Explore the similarities between yourself, the boyfriend and the dork. There may be more to it, your just not yet to being able to put it into words.
What does the dream relate to your inner fears, angst, other. Does this hypothetical relationship relate to an inner fear (Oh my god he’s turning into a dork!) (Geez, now that I’m less infatuated, you seem like a dork?) – you will marry a dork in the future out of fears of inadaquacy.
Ultimately the sad truth is that we dorks got it all. You have no choice. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Muhaahaha!
In the end the geeks shall inherit the earth.
