How good are artists at depicting dreams?

Is it possible to accurately convey a dream, or is the general idea the most we can hope for? Do you think that visual artists like Salvador Dali and Dave McKean do a better job of showing us dreams, or is film a better medium because it has a narrative? Are there any other good examples of dreams in art that you can think of, and do they “get” it?

Everyone dreams in a different style, it’s our own brain. So no, I think they suck at depicting ‘our dreams’ or some generalized ‘idea of a dream’. They represent a stylized and skewed version of their own dreams and nothing more.

And even then, it’s only what they remember of them, provided they aren’t just making it up as an idea of a dream. We forget almost all of our dreams upon waking anyway, unless they’re fairly upsetting or recurrent in most cases.

It’s not possible to accurately convey anything, let alone dreams.

@Sampson

I wish my dreams were half that interesting.

Also, regarding the narrative(s) of dreams, I’ve read somewhere that narrative doesn’t actually exist but is imposed on the images of the dream afterward (?) or during the dream. I’ll have to look for some kind of source of that.

I like this image, though.

I’ve tried painting and drawing my dreams and always failed. I think some of them would work as film though.

I can depict my own dreams very well.It’s when other people tell me theirs,that I will fail because I usually fall asleep listening.to them…and then dreaming my own dreams which I can depict very well…lol!

Playboy does a pretty good job depicting my dreams…

It depends on how well they can remember the dream and how they would make the picture. Do they want to make a color line picture from the sounds they heard? Do they want to show the actuall part?

@CyanoticWasp now why don’t I ever get dreams like that… :(
