Is your brain wired to notice small details, or do you go through life not really noticing things unless they make a great impact?

I was a HS English teacher last week. I was meandering through the classroom as the kids were working, and came across this book. “The Freud Reader.” I was intriguing, so I picked it up and looked at it more carefully….and started cracking up (silently, of course.) :) Is this IRONIC or what?! (see link)

Details. My wife is the opposite. The range of ‘normal’ encompasses a spectrum of OCD behavior, with some of us closer to one end than the other.

I am definitely a detail noticing person; it scares me sometimes how much I remember about other Flutherers, for example. Sometimes, people like my husband think I am weird because of the connections I make between things.

@janbb Oh, I do want straight answers! But it’s also kind of interesting, as an aside, that it appears some folks didn’t get the irony in the link I posted…but, I could be wrong. Just because they didn’t comment on it doesn’t mean they didn’t see it or “get” it.

Very detail-oriented person here… when necessary however, I can take a step back for a different perspective. It’s taken years of practice though, and a lot of discipline when emotions start to flow.

I tend to notice details, especially in the outside world e.g. cloud formations, light quality, birdsong, the development of flowers, colour and so on and so on. I have noticed most people do not seem to notice such things.

Wow. Am I the only female who just goes for the gist? I tend to focus on what is necessary in the moment. (This is actually one of my survival skills.). But that is not to say that I don’t notice the small things around me. I find so much around me amusing. So do you, apparently.

@Adagio I’m with you. I was taking my kids to school once when I saw some Morning Glories trailing through a wooden fence. They were so lovely! I pointed them out to the kids and my daughter said, “Mom. You always see the smallest, neatest things….” :)

I don’t notice details at all. Heck I don’t even notice the blindingly obvious most of the time. But then I have a visual disability so I miss a lot of things simply because I’m not physically able to see them at all.
