How to determine if a chimney is load bearing/structural?

We live in a two story farmhouse built around 1900. We are considering removing the chimney that runs through the center of the house to gain square footage. The chimney has not been used for years and is framed in with drywall. Short of calling in a structural engineer, how do we determine if the chimney is load bearing/structural?

I would bet it is part of the load bearing just from the fact it is in an old farm house. It would pay to have it examined and advice paid for. You will save alot of money and time on construction and materials. You are planning a major event.
