My dad claims The New York Times is far too liberal. My older brother’s tiff with the L.A. Times is for a completely different reason – their layout design ugly.
People readily throw around “too conservative” and “too liberal” in reference to the Press, but I doubt they will ever be wholly satisfied with the media as a whole—(Wikipedia is not word of law, nor should it be your final stop if this is a topic that interests you, but there is a rough overview on the history of Media Bias in the United States here.)
Theoretically, the Press should be as free of media bias as possible. That’s not easy to accomplish, especially since the newspaper industry is still a business. One can’t help but consider who their readership is, what articles will appeal to them, what advertisements they should seek to get the best funding, etc. There’s also the issue between who runs the company and who writes individual articles.
These issues can even be found in the microcosm of school papers. My poor journalism teacher was trying to teach us about keeping the News articles strictly about the facts, and always extending the issue of writing opinions that reflect multiple viewpoints. This was nearly impossible to accomplish. I tried at least.
