How do I open the Documents and Settings folder in Windows 7?

Asked by HungryGuy (16044points) June 20th, 2010

When I click on Documents and Settings, it tells me that Access is Denied. This is my own computer and I had thought that maybe I was logged on as a non-administrator account, but I juct checked and I’m using an administrator account. What do I need to do to give myself the authority?

Maybe it’s defunct and everything is now in the Users directory?

On my Vista machine, “C:\Documents and Settings” is just a shortcut and “Access is Denied”.

UPDATE:
“In Windows Vista and Windows Server “Longhorn”, the default locations for user data and system data have changed. For example, user data that was previously stored in the %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings directory is now stored in the %SystemDrive%\Users directory. In order to minimize the amount of application compatibility problems users would experience due to the change in folders names, such as C:\Documents and Settings moving to C:\Users, Microsoft employed junction points. ”

Aha! You’re probably right. I just booted Linux for a few minutes, and when I mounted the Win 7 C: drive, I couldn’t find the D&S folder.

Stupid Microsoft! Always changing things around (grumble, grumble)...

Everything is in Users/YourUserName/ in 7. However, you can right click any folder that denies you access and click “take ownership” and it will let you through. However, D&S is just a shortcut to the Users in 7 as well.

Okay. Sounds good. What I’m up to is I just watched a long video on YouTube. I want to copy it to my external drive to save it. I used to do this on XP by going to D&S and then Temporary Internet Files and then find the latest .FLV file there. Where is the equvalent to Temporary Internet Files on Win 7?

@HungryGuy Are you using IE or Firefox or what?

HungryGuy's avatar

I’m still using IE. I just got this machine and haven’t bothered to change much around or customize it yet.

Anyway, if y’all excuse me for a while, I’m gonna go steal a motorcycle and get chased around by the cops for a while…

Check C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Temp
If it isn’t there, you can go to http://clipnabber.com/?lang=en and put in the YouTube url and download it like that, plus it gives you an mp4 version which is good cuz flv makes my system flip out.

@papayalily – Thanks! That clip nabber thing works pretty good.
