Where do you live, do you have a recent a traffic conviction, any accidents, how far do you drive everyday, is this a “Weekend only” car?
You also have to factor in the value of the car. An ‘86 is considered a “classic” since it is over 25 years old. So it’s value goes up and the insurance goes up too.

In NY state, a car that is 25 years or older can be classified as Historic or Vintage if you drive less than X miles per year and bother to change your registration . The insurance becomes very cheap. Are you going to drive it a lot? Does your state havea similar program? It is worth checking.
